On the dry-erase board in the Rays’ clubhouse, the meeting held prior to batting practice today was billed as a discussion about the upcoming road trip, and when asked about it later, Joe Maddon said the purpose was to decide on the outfit theme for the swing through New York, Boston and Baltimore.
However, it sounds like Maddon—who isn’t a big team-meeting guy, as he has said numerous times in the past—also managed to work in some directives a bit more pertinent to the task at hand. Nothing over-the-top, from what I can gather—just a reiteration of his usual themes like focusing on each game as a standalone entity and the importance of each inning, at-bat and pitch when you’re fighting for a playoff spot.
As for the dress code, that apparently was left in the hands of the players to decide.
“My suggestion is all-plaid—the Herb Tarlek, WKRP in Cincinnati, all-plaid theme,” Maddon said. “That got a few scowls, so I want to leave it open to the rest of the group. Somebody suggested the business trip with all suit-and-tie and that kind of stuff, which I’m fine with. I can match up. And somebody wants to go camo.”
