The Rays designated minor league catcher Nevin Ashley for assignment Friday to clear room on the 40-man roster for Luke Scott, who signed earlier this week.
If not claimed off waivers by another team, Ashley can resign with the Rays on a minor league contract.
Ashley, 27, was a sixth-round pick in the 2006 draft who impressed Rays manager Joe Maddon during spring training of 2010 when he batted .474 with a home run (off Josh Beckett) in nine games.
He split the 2011 season between Double A Montgomery (.280, 6 home runs, 33 RBI in 80 games) and Triple A Durham (.218, 2 home runs, 15 RBI in 32 games).
Ashley traveled with the Rays during the 2010 postseason as insurance in case Kelly Shoppach or John Jaso was injured, but he was never activated.
