Updated with full terms of the deal
The Rays are really starting to move the parts that didn’t fit here.
On the heels of last night’s Seth McClung deal, Jorge Cantu is on his way to the Reds along with Montgomery outfielder Shaun Cumberland and cash for a couple of minor-league pitchers—lefty Brian Shackelford and right-hander Calvin Medlock—and “future considerations.”
I’ve seen quite a bit of Shackelford, who can be useful as a situational lefty. Medlock is an interesting guy—only 24, low-round pick who has put up good numbers in Double-A but struggled in limited time at the next level.
Shackelford and Medlock will report to Durham.
Cantu was added to the Reds’ 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Louisville, which is hosting a doubleheader against Durham tonight. Cantu may have a short stay in the minors. Many believe the Reds will move veteran first baseman Jeff Conine by Tuesday’s trade deadline, and Cantu would make sense as a right-handed backup to Scott Hatteberg.

Cantu was never given a chance this season. Much like McClung he vented when sent down and now both are gone. If they would have played Cantu a little more they might have been able to get more than two minor league pitchers who will never play at the next level.
Why are the Rays always trading Major league talent and never getting any in return?

The fact that the team got more than a 6 pack of Natural Light for Cantu is a major accomplishment. Since Cantu’s “Mongolian Beef” wasn’t cutting the trick anymore, he’s back to where he was pre-beef.

Its now or never for alot of people I’ve talked to. Going to a Yankees game and seeing a spanish band playing for their fans makes me want to throw up! Spend some money for some veteran pitchers and this team can definetly contend! Continue to do nothing and the few good players are gonna leave for big money! Make good on your PROMISES!!

I’ll trade you organizations. As you can tell i’m a Pirates fan our organization is god awful with very little talent in the minors. Rays got some nice young talent(sonnanstine, shields, kazmir, delmon young, carl crawford as the core group) i would be more then happy with the talent they have in the minors. The Trop needed to be a dome which when they built the stadium they didn’t build it as such.

OUTSTANDING MOVE!!!!! That bum Cantu was on ROIDS the year he hit 20+ HR and had 100 RBI. What in the heck did he ever do before that year and after that year? Absolutely nothing.
And good riddens to McClung. Im just happy i’ll never have to watch another McClung walk or another Cantu K.

The Rays are back to becoming the joke of MLB. Sternberg and crew are out to squeeze their investment and that is it. Joe Madden and his little pitch count machine needs to take a hike.
10 years of nothing and now the only national publicity Tampa Bay getsis on todays FOX pre game show with host Kevin Kennedy calling this organization out.
I am sick of going to Rays games surrounded by opponents fans. oh I forgot, Sternberg is making a buck so all is Good by him and his joke of a “field manager”.

I know the Rays are a team that looks forward to the future years as their young players develop, but would it hurt to trade for a experience major leauge player. I mean if you take a gander into trades in the past there isn’t a major leaguer that we traded aquired. Trades like Aubrey Huff,Julio Jugo, Danny Baez and what did we get? Players like Ben Zobrist who lasted about 2 seconds in the majors. Would it hurt to trade for a bullpen pitcher who would help our record now instead in 5 years. Sternberg needs to realize if we dont start winning now,the Tampa Bay Rays won’t be in Tampa by the turn of the decade.

The reason the Rays keep trading Major League talent and getting nothing in return is because the owners don’t want to PAY THEIR PLAYERS! They want to pig out and keep the money for themselves! Teams like the Red Sox and Yankees PAY the Rays owners and they put NOTHING back into the team. It’s got to end!
