First baseman Dan Johnson, author of one of the greatest moments in Rays history, signed a one-year, $500,000 major league-deal with the team today.
Rays fans remember Johnson’s pinch-hit, solo blast off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning Sept. 9, 2008 at Fenway Park that tied the score at 4-4 and enabled the Rays to rally for a 5-4 victory and increase their lead over the second-place Red Sox to 1.5 games.
Johnson had been called up from Triple A Durham that morning, but was late getting to Fenway Park because of flight delays and rush-hour traffic.
Johnson was not a member of the post-season roster and was released after the season. He played for the Yokohama BayStars last season.
