Here’s an update from sold out Charlotte Sports Park …
The two candidates for the final spot in the rotation didn’t do much to distinguish themselves against the visiting Red Sox.
Andy Sonnanstine started and lasted an inning. He walked the first three batters and allowed a run-scoring single. Another run scored on a fielder’s choice. Sonnanstine escaped further damage when Lars Anderson smoked a line drive that was turned into a 4-3 double play by Ben Zobrist. Sonnanstine needed 29 pitchers to get through the inning.
Wade Davis was scheduled to go two innings, but made it through 1 2/3 after allowing two runs on a hit and three walks.
The Rays received their first home runs this spring by someone other than Sean Rodriguez.
Ben Zobrist hit a bomb that landed on the boardwalk behind the Rays bullpen in right field in the fourth inning.
Kelly Shoppach homered into the visiting bullpen in left field with B.J. Upton on first base.
The Rays held a 4-3 lead after five innings.
