The Rays are four games back in the Wild Card standings with 12 games to play as they enter this afternoon’s game with the Wild Card-leading Red Sox.

This is about as must-win as you can get for Sept. 17.

Jeff Niemann (10-7, 3.97) is 1-0 in two starts this season against the Red Sox, holding them to a .089 average.

Jon Lester (15-7, 3.07) is on the hill for the BoSox. Lester had allowed just four runs and struck out 16 in his two starts against the Rays prior to his start last Sunday at the Trop. The Rays reached him for four runs on eight hits in four innings as they completed a three-game sweep with a 9-1 win.

The Red Sox beat the Rays 4-3 last night, snapping a six-game losing streak to the Rays.

Brandon Guyer, who has a hit in six career at-bats against Lester, gets the start in right field.

Dr. Koco Eaton is in town to see Kyle Farnsworth and Sam Fuld.

Farnsworth threw the ball 25 times Friday in the sock drill and did some other exercises to test his strained right elbow. If Dr. Eaton likes what he sees, Farnsworth will throw on the field Sunday and a bullpen Tuesday in New York with the idea of being ready to pitch Thursday against the Yankees.

Fuld strained the ECU tendon in his right hand. He is able to pinch-run and play defense. Dr. Eaton will look at the MRI taken Friday. If he feels Fuld can’t further damage the tendon by swinging, Fuld will be allowed to hit.
