ROGER MOONEY
BOSTON Good morning from Fenway Park. And, while we’re at it, good afternoon and good evening.
It’s going to be a long day at the ball yard and that’s not including the rain, which is expected to be heavy this afternoon.
The Rays and Red Sox hook up in a day/night doubleheader made possible because of a rainout here back in April.
James Shields faces Jon Lester in the first game.
Jeff Niemann hooks up with Erik Bedard in the night cap.
The Red Sox are slumping a bit. They are 7-6 in August and begin the day tied with the Yankees for both first place in the AL East and the AL Wild Card standings.
The Rays remain nine games back in both races.
Johnny Damon is not in the lineup despite a career .296 average against the lefty Lester.
Sam Fuld, who has a hit in three at-bats against Lester, starts in right field. Ben Zobrist moves to DH.
We’ll ask Joe Maddon about this.
Here is the Rays lineup:
Jennings LF
Fuld RF
Longoria 3B
Zobrist DH
Upton CF
Kotchman 1B
Rodriguez 2B
Shoppach C
Johnson SS
—
Shields P
Longoria 3B
