The Rays are expected to announce this afternoon that they have signed RHP reliver Fernando Rodney.
According to ESPN Desportes reporter Enrique Rojas, who first reported the deal, Rodney agreed to a one-year, $1.75 million contract for this season with a $2.5 million option or $250,000 buyout for 2013.
“It’s confirmed, will be published in January if God permits. I signed for one year with Tampa Bay to keep working hard and see if God gives me something better,” Rodney told ESPN Deportes.
Rodney, who turns 35 in March, will give the bullpen another pitcher with experience as a closer. He has 87 career saves, including a career-high 37 in 2009. He could serve as insurance for Kyle Farnsworth, who was limited last September by tenderness in his right elbow.
Rodney spent his first seven years in the big leagues with the Tigers and the past two with the Angeles, where he wasn’t happy about his role as a set-up man.
