The Tampa Bay Rays will open the 2011 regular season on Friday, April 1 at Tropicana Field vs. the Baltimore Orioles. The schedule is subject to change.
Major League Baseball adopted the recommendation of The Commissioner’s Special Committee for On-Field Matters to begin the regular season earlier and mid-week to avoid playing World Series games in November.
While this will be the first time in club history the Rays have opened the season on a day other than a Monday or Tuesday, it will be the fourth time in the last six years and the fifth time overall that they will open against the Orioles making them the Rays most popular opening day opponent.
The season-opening five-game homestand also includes Saturday and Sunday games vs. the Orioles (April 2-3) and a two-game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (April 5-6).
The 2011 season concludes when the Rays host the New York Yankees in a three-game weekend series, September 26-28.
The Boston Red Sox will play a pair of weekend series at Tropicana Field (July 15-17 and September 9-11).
The St. Louis Cardinals, who trained in St. Petersburg for 57 years (1938-42 and 1946-97), will make their second interleague appearance at Tropicana Field celebrating the holiday weekend, July 1-3. They last visited in 2005.
The remaining interleague home schedule features a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds, June 26-28, and the annual visit by the Florida Marlins, June 17-19. The Rays will make their first trip to Milwaukee’s Miller Park, June 20-23, leaving Dodger Stadium and Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. as the only current ballparks in which they will not have played a game.
The Rays will also visit the Houston Astros for the second straight season, June 24-26, and face the Marlins in their final games at Sun Life Stadium, May 20-22.
As it was in each of the last 10 seasons, the 2011 major league schedule follows an unbalanced format, meaning each team will play more games against teams in their own division. T
he Rays will play 72 games against the four American League East opponents: 18 each against the Red Sox, Yankees, Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays.
While each AL East team will make three visits to Tropicana Field, all other AL teams will make one trip to Tampa Bay except for the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim who each come in for two series.
The Rays will visit each AL East team three times and all other AL teams once except the Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners who will host the Rays in two series.
