BOSTON—The Rays got off to a promising start tonight against the Red Sox. Rain washed away the effort.
After a rain delay of two hours and 20 minutes, the game was postponed to Sunday, when it will be played as part of a noon and 5 p.m. double-header.
The teams played all of 12 minutes of baseball. Jason Bartlett and Carl Crawford opened with singles agianst Jon Lester, and Ben Zobrist reached on a slow roller toward third base that Mike Lowell couldn’t get to in time. But with Pat Burrell batting, a drizzle turned into a fairly heavy rain, and a delay was called.
The tarp never came off the infield.
James Shields, who would have pitched tonight for the Rays, will take Sunday’s second game and face Lester. Matt Garza will pitch Sunday’s early game against Clay Buchholz, and rookie Wade Davis will take on veteran Josh Beckett tomorrow (Saturday) night - weather permitting, and that’s in question.
Both of Sunday’s games will be televised by Sun Sports and carried on WFLA 970 radio.
Maddon didn’t question the decision to start Friday’s game in a light rain, with radar showing more rain on the way.
“(Umpire crew chief) Randy Marsh did a good job,” he said. “He came in before the game began and said there’s probably going to be some light rain and we’d be able to play through it, and eventually we’d be fine. But it didn’t work out that way.”
