Before I get too deep into a couple of stories I’m writing for tomorrow’s Tampa Tribune, I’d like to give you a quick rundown of some of the topics covered at USF’s weekly media luncheon this afternoon on campus. Here goes:
* Obviously the USF-Miami game dominated conversation. The Bulls respect the Canes and are saying all the right stuff about Miami’s tradition and how important it could be for the program to beat Miami on Saturday at Raymond James Stadium, but you also get the idea that they think they are every bit as good as Miami. I’m looking more forward to this game by the hour because the teams compare favorably, built around speed and young-but-exciting quarterbacks.
* Senior DE George Selvie talked about how emotional his final home game will be on Saturday. The program has come a long way with Selvie around, and playing Miami at home is a big moment in his career. I’ll have more from Selvie later this week on the blog.
* Men’s basketball coach Stan Heath didn’t really want to play his former school, Kent State, but a scheduling issue forced his hand. On Wednesday at the Sun Dome, Heath’s 4-1 Bulls face his former school, which he led to the Elite 8 eight years ago to make a name for himself. I’ll have a short story in the paper about this tomorrow.
* QB B.J. Daniels grew up in Tallahassee a few miles from Doak Campbell Stadium. So he hated Miami growing up, right? Not really. Daniels actually liked Miami growing up, but that all changes Saturday when the Canes show up at RJS.
* USF freshmen Kayvon Webster and Sam Barrington were both hot for Miami in high school, but both opted to come to USF instead. I’ll have a look at those two and other Miami connections in tomorrow’s Tribune.
That’s it for now. Check back with TBO.com and ‘Shootin’ the Bull’ later for more coverage of the USF-Miami game.

lets stop and GO BACK to the RUTGERS game
What were the coaches doing the week of the game?
Both offense and defenses coaches failed in their game plans…
when Syracuse can beat Rutgers and USF is humiliated….by Rutgers…
there is a coaching problem.
the players usually remain the same…week to week…except for key injuries
So what does Coach Leavitt have to say about the Canales and Tresey game plan? Did Coach Leavitt review the game plan with his coaches or trust them to do the right plan?
There needs to be some explanation as to why we fail when we should win…just as there is some kudos to winning when it is unexpected.

Steve, Canales and Leavitt admitted that they tried to protect Daniels in that game and bottled him up, as opposed to letting him have more freedom as he did in the FSU game and Louisville game.
Meanwhile, Randy Shannon and the UM players continue to say that we are not in their league and are not yet on the map. If they mean that we ahven’t accumulated enough player arrests, I guess they are right.
USF 28, UM 21. GO BULLS!

dan, sorry dont buy it.
bottle up your star player???
maybe the coaches can share why?
maybe to give the ???running backs???? the game?
i dont think so, what kind of plan is that??? when do we have a running game? unless BJ runs
Hopefully are game plan we be less predictable and disorganized than the rutgers game…
adding more speed with Lamar can’t hurt opening the field and keeping linebackers following him…jmho

Why they did it, I don’t remember. it’s in the trib archives, i’m sure. I hink the thinking was not to make the game plan overly complicated for him or something.
