Though he was listed on the press box lineup as “Dale” Shields, James Shields had a relatively easy day in his first outing of the spring.
“They’ll get it right around here,” Shields said. “I’ve been around for a couple of years. They’ll get it right. At least they didn’t call me Scott.”
The righty worked one inning against the Orioles at Ed Smith Stadium. He walked one and struck out one.
“It’s exciting,” Shields said. “First time out, I held my own for my one inning. It’s great to be out here. It’s great to have that baseball atmosphere. You walk in from the bullpen and you hear the crowd yelling my name. It feels pretty good to get back in it.”
Shields walked leadoff batter Adam Jones and almost had Jones picked off first base, but first baseman Ryan Shealy dropped the throw. It went down as an E-3, the first error of the spring for the Rays.
“He was out,” Shields said. “Shealy told me he kind of came up and showed the umpire the ball and the ball kind of popped out of his mitt. The umpire was like, “I can’t call him out.’ It is what it is. (Jones) had a pretty big lead. I told (pitching coach Jim) Hickey, ‘I don’t know if I should have shown my pickoff move that early.’ ”
Shields threw 12 pitches, eight for strikes.
