Questions USF Faces Entering Next Season

Posted Dec 9, 2009 by Scott Carter

Updated Dec 9, 2009 at 04:09 PM

I wrote a regular-season wrap-up story for today’s edition of The Tampa Tribune. In case you missed it, click here for the story. The chart below also ran in the paper. What is the biggest question you think the Bulls face entering next season?

LOOKING AHEAD

USF (7-5) must defeat Northern Illinois in the International Bowl to avoid its worst record since 6-6 in 2005, USF’s first season in the Big East. The Tribune’s Scott Carter offers five key questions USF faces entering next season:

Will quarterback B.J. Daniels continue to improve and build on his freshman season, or will he suffer the infamous sophomore slump? Daniels showed signs of becoming an elite college quarterback, but he needs to be more consistent to turn the Bulls into consistent winners.

How much impact will USF’s win at Florida State have in recruiting? In years past, the Bulls often have lost out to FSU, Miami and Florida on top recruits in their home state, but the Bulls’ win against the Seminoles and the added exposure of playing Miami the next five years could help this winter.

Can the defensive line reload enough to replace senior DE George Selvie and possibly DE Jason Pierre-Paul if he opts to turn pro? Coach Jim Leavitt has made it clear adding depth on the interior defensive line is a priority, but if Pierre-Paul leaves, the outside will need a total makeover as well.

Will Leavitt be able to keep his staff intact, or will there be departures? Leavitt had three new assistants on his staff this season, including defensive coordinator Joe Tresey. Keeping the staff intact should minimize adjustments for the players and any chemistry concerns entering next season.

Who will step up and help out Daniels in the running game? Daniels led the team and set a school record for rushing yards by a freshman, but with the departure of senior RB Mo Plancher and inconsistent production from the underclassmen, someone must step up and take some of the rushing load off Daniels.

Daniels will improve, but so will defenses trying to stop him; now there’s film showing his tendencies. As with Grothe, they will game plan for him, but immense discipline is necessary for them - or us - to be successful in that.

USF’s win at Florida State will be huge, because recruitsd always suspected they were on the decline and now it’s confirmed. With Bowden gone, some of the mystique disappears as well. And if Jimbo has an unsuccessful season, it’s over for quite a while. USF benefits from that.

The defense has always had to reload after graduating its seniors. Many of our defensive stars are in the NFL, so they are to9ugh to replace. but just as pierre paul seemed to come out of nowhere, so will the next generation of defensive stars. Hopefully, they will come out sooner rather than later.

Leavitt never seems to be able to keep his staff intact, because on average they are paid so litle. Problem is, it never seems like USF is prepared for the turnover. No reason to think that won’t continue, but I hope Tresey stays so we can see what he’s really capable of.

Finally, the elusive running game will remain elusive. Maybe Canales will recruit some good backs; our running backs are always promised to be the next big thing, but they don’t ever seem to pan out to be that… but I don’t know why.

Looking forward to a fun bowl game and a great season next year. If all the answers were solved, where would be the fun in that?

Next year will be no different than any other for the Bulls or any decent team.
The question will be how strong will the OL and DL lines be.
The Bulls have plenty of skilled players. BJ will continue to improve. The RBs are talented as are the receivers.
RBs need holes, QB needs time, and the DL must stop the run and pressure the QB.
All winners will do that. Look at Alabama.

And coach Leavitt is very aware of his team’s needs. He will recruit accordingly

Scott….I think THE biggest question is, what will CJL and his staff do to maintain consistency with this program.  The Bulls have fallen victim to the same problem for 3 straight years….different players but mostly the same coaches (especially CJL).

So the finger-pointing needs to go in one direction and what can/will CJL and the staff do to change what has now become a distraction to this program locally and nationally.  People who used to speak highly of USF now also mention the reoccuring collapses.

One thing you can always count on is your ignorant detractors every year. That’s been consistant.

Dan…..lets talk about ignorant.  I have been posting here since the blog originated with Brett.  During that time and to this day I have been in complete support of this program and the university as an alumnus.

What should be expected of a loyal supporter is to question anything that they may care about but yet they find fault with, incomplete or without progress.

Blinding and unquestioning resolve is ignorant and that is where you come in. As as far as I can tell, you are fairly new to this blog, although you make up for it in daily postings, so before you name-call, label or misrepresent someone….sit down and think.

I’m not happy with Leavitt either, and have said so for the last couple of years.  I predicted a 7-5 season and to get to 7-wins, Bulls would have to pull off their typical yearly big upset -which was FSU. Assess USF’s losses.  They got embarrassed on national tv not once but three times (Rutgers, Cincinnati and Miami) & Pitt game was terrible. Leavitt gets outcoached when playing tough teams in BE (except fot WVU?). Dan, loyal fans can be citical, but should also be fair in their criticism. CJL is just not the coach to lead USF in the future if 9-wins or more and a BE championship are the goals.

Look at next season based on where team is currently.  USF and Leavitt are consistent: always lose against Rutgers, Cincy and lose when playing “At” UCONN and “At” Louisville. Bulls do have 4 BE home games next year though; however, 2 of those are Rutgers and Pitt. Based on history and Thursday nite jinx, they lose against Rutgers, Cincy, Pitt, Louisville, Florida and Miami for 6-6 record. However, to do so, they have to beat WVU in away game. With one usual yearly upset, they beat Pitt at home and end up 7-5. Brian Kelly is gone to ND, so not sure about Cincy: possible wildcard? Bad news: USF runs into Kelly again when they play at Notre Dame in 2011!

Not new to the blog and didn’t call you ignorant, but if you infer it from my post, so be it. Changed user name when I changed email recently. No blind loyalty, reread my stuff. I’m just not hell bent on piling on leavitt. Telling me that the future is doomed when the players change every year, well, you guys will just have to agree to disagree with me.

Por (Dan Alatorre) on December 13, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Don G, your analysis is just plain wrong. We will never beat a team on future years because we didn’t beat them in the past? That’s your major contribution? I guess we don’t ever graduate players into the NFL and I guess those other teams keep their players forever. It’s not even logical. We need better depth and that comes in part from just being around a while.

Suppose all things were equal. Say USF had won a national championship ten years ago. Recruits would still want to play for Florida over USF because florida has won championships more recently. They would pick fsu to play for the legend Bobby bowden. They would pick um because it’s more prestigious, has better facilities, is closer to the beach, whatever. Those schools went decades without championships and without dominating their conference. Some things take time.

Very well Dan….I will agree to disagree.  I rather not argue about what was said or interpreted and would prefer for both of us to freely enjoy and contribute to the blog as often as we both do.

I know things take time and depth does not come over night but the up-down nature of the team, the undisciplined play and the sometimes lack of motivation/fire/excitement has nothing to do with depth or recruits.  And if that happens yearly, then the problem is systemic.

Por (Don G) on December 13, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Dan, it is logical until USF proves otherwise.  I based my 7-5 predication before this season on their history, pattern of terrible record in BE away games & Thurs nite jinx.  I factored in win against WVU, as USF matches up well against them and Bulls have their number. My predication was spot on and they lost to Cincy & Rutgers again, and lost at UCONN again and lost big on Thurs nites.  So, my analysis is as logical as yours or others who say a coach & team needs time to develop. I wish I was wrong, and maybe their 12 or so redshirts from this year will add needed depth at those critical positions of need, but there are coaching patterns and consistent poor decisions that taint CJL for me.

Folks, I watched this type of stuff cost the Buccaneers their head coach, and look at the Bucs now. It’s not the same, but it’s similar. I will not stand idly by and watch it happen at USF, especially if I don’t agree with the reasoning. Btw, 2 years ago the big east was won by the team with the most penalties; it’s hard to predict the future if 1/3 of the players on all the teams change every year, while we lose underpaid asst coaches to better paying gigs, etc. Coach Leavitt can’t do it all. There’s a lot of tortured logic out there and not a lot of patience or perspective. Thanks for an engaging conversation about our USF Bulls!
