University of South Florida coach Jim Leavitt and sophomore quarterback Carlton Hill both told me that Hill has met the necessary academic requirements for the spring semester and Hill will be eligible in the fall. Hill’s eligibility had been in question because he had missed part of spring drills to take care of academic commitments.
“It’s a big relief,” Hill said. “I passed everything. I’ll be eligible. I’ll be ready in the fall.” Hill was named the starter before spring drills, but fell behind senior Pat Julmiste and freshman Matt Grothe - or behind freshman Matt Grothe and senior Pat Julmiste, if you prefer - after a disappointing spring. Now with Hill set for fall drills, it should make for an interesting battle between (in alphabetical order) Grothe, Hill and Julmiste for the starting position. Leavitt has told me on numerous occassions how important the summer workouts are for his players, so it will be interesting to see what kind of shape they report in for fall drills.
So with Hill set for this fall, there is only 122 days remaining until the season opener against McNeese State to debate who will be the starter. Well, what are you waiting for?

The writer from the Times said that Hill has not yet been cleared....whats the truth?

I hope Matt Grothe will be ready to take the Bulls to a winning season. Last years one dimensional offense with Andre Hall is over. CFN is already making derogatory remarks about USF football for the 06 season with the loss of Hall and the return of Julmiste as starting QB. I have to agree with Scott McMecan from Tx. Hopefully the starting 11 and the offensive coordinator will be able to put a 1st and goal unit together.

Is he or isn’t he eligible, will he or won’t he be reshirted?
Due to those uncertanties (and I was a Hill supporter until his academic and fball inconsistencies) I would say that the QB battle will really be between Grothe and PJ.
From those two I would select Grothe. I have seen what PJ can do and I am not satisfied. We can argue that he’s the only QB with starting and winning experience but our winning percentage is not that high, like other schools.
With this corps of WRs, who catch everything under the sun, and the lack of a premier RB (they’re good but have yet to prove themselves) a spread attack is needed. That being the case, let the best arm, mind and on-field presence play...let it be Grothe!

I vote for Pat Julmiste. Why?
Because I love watching an offense that has mastered the art of the “three and out.” Because I love eeking out close wins over inferior opponents because our defense is more of a threat to score than our offense. Because I love losing to teams we ought to beat. Because I can’t get enough of seeing great defensive efforts wasted.
So if you love all of the above like I do, I just know you’ll cast your vote for ol’ #3 to lead us into mediocrity again this season.

Well this all fine and good, but if basic fresh. classes are a problem at what point will he struggle agian? He will be playing WR for this fall. There is no way he can get the O in a summer. This is going to be Grothe’s position for the next four years.

I like how you went out of your way to make sure you weren’t placing one QB over another. I particularly liked the alphabetical order comment. My personal pick at this point is Grothe but there is a long way to go before the opener.

Brett, I know there are plenty of PJ haters, but why not just redshirt Hill (concentrate on grades and getting stronger) and go with PJ and Matt this fall? Whoever starts the 1st two games will look like Joe Montana and even UCF should not put up a big fight. I see the Bulls 7-5 or 8-4 this fall depending on some breaks. Another very solid year.
