David Price will become the youngest pitcher to start an All-Star Game since 1988 when he takes the hill tomorrow night against the National League at Angels Stadium.
This gives the Rays three starters in Tuesday’s game. Third baseman Evan Longoria and left fielder Carl Crawford were voted to the starting lineup by the fans.
Closer Rafael Soriano was added to the team when Yankee closer Mariano Rivera dropped out of the game because of injuries.
Price, 12-4 with an American League-low 2.42 ERA, was picked today by Yankee manager Joe Girardi to start for the American League.
Girardi, the AL manager, has Longoria batting sixth and Crawford ninth in tomorrow night’s lineup.
The 24-year-old Price, who is participating in his first All-Star Game, is the youngest starting pitcher since a 23-year-old Dwight Gooden started for the National League in 1988.
Price was voted to the team by the American League players. He received the most votes of any pitcher.
The Rays have never had a player start the game. Designated hitter Jose Canseco (1999) and Longoria (2009) were voted to the starting lineup, but both missed the game due to injuries. Canseco had back surgery in July 1999 and Longoria missed last year’s game because of an infected finger.
