Price takes mound today against Twins

PORT CHARLOTTE Davis Price is on the mound for the Rays this afternoon as they face the Twins for the final time this spring at Charlotte Sports Park.

In his previous outing, Saturday against the Twins, Price allowed 11 hits and five runs (three earned) in four innings. The lefty has not looked particularly sharp this spring. He has a 6.75 ERA in three Grapefruit League outings.

Getting hit on his right hand with the barrel of a broken bat against the Red Sox hasn’t helped. Not so much because of the injury - it was a bruised palm and thumb that didn’t not prevent him from making his next start. But the injury limited him to one inning against the BoSox and that next start was a controlled outing in a minor league intrasquad game.

As a result, Price has pitched only 6 2/3 innings in Grapefruit League action and has allowed 15 hits and five earned runs.

Still, he says he’s fine, and Rays manager Joe Maddon is not going to say anything to the contrary.

Price will begin the season as either the Rays third or fourth starter, depending on how Maddon wants to match-up Price and Jeff Niemann during the first week of the season.
