David Price agreed to a one-year, $4.35 million contract today with the Rays, thus avoiding arbitration.
The figure matches the $4.35 given to Dontrelle Willis in 2006 for the highest contract given to a pitcher in his first year of arbitration eligibility.
Here is what Price had to say about his new deal.
On getting the contract finished:
“I was pretty confident. I actually really didn’t know anything that was going on. I kind of stayed out of it. I have all the faith in (his agent Bo McKinnis). He takes care of me and got me what I felt I deserve.”
On matching Willis:
“It’s awesome. You’re always trying to set records, so it’s pretty cool that I can tie him.”
On the possibility of a long-term deal with the Rays:
“I love being a Ray. I love the organization. I love all the guys in the organization, even with the trainers and the guys who work in the clubhouse. I love it here. I love the community here, as well. It’s a good place for me to be. As long as I’m here I’ll give it everything I got. If we can work something out, so be it. If not, it’s part of the business, and you have to take it one day at a time.”
On the Rays offseason additions:
“I think those guys are a great addition. To have (Burke) Badenhop and (Fernando) Rodney in the bullpen, those are two good arms we’ve added right there. Those guys are big, guys who have been around the league, that’s good. And Luke Scott, when he was healthy in 2009, the numbers he put up, if he can come and do something remotely close to what he’s done then that will be huge for us. I always look at him across the field, he’s always having a good time, smiling, joking around with the guys. That’s what this team is about. We’re one unit. We have a good time. Everybody has a relationship with everyone on the team. We feel like this guy is a good addition.”
On what how he might spend some of his new contract:
“I might ask Jeter if I can buy a wing in his house for a little while.”
