First off, welcome. After a five-month hiatus, the Seminoles blog is back. Hope you tune in regularly for what I hope will be an informative and entertaining way to exchange information, ideas and opinions on FSU sports and who knows what else.
I was in Publix over the weekend and couldn’t help but notice the preseason college football magazines are already hitting newstands and we’re not even to the All-Star break in baseball yet.
On the cover of Athlon’s Atlantic Coast Conference edition, the headline screams “Arms Race,’’ with a picture of FSU quarterback Drew Weatherford and Miami’s Kyle Wright firing away. Inside, the preseason Top 25 was what I wanted to read. Athlon has Oklahoma No. 1. Of Florida’s Big Three, the Gators are fifth, Miami, 14th, and FSU 17th. So, with kickoff three months away, is Athlon right on or way off? Is Florida clearly the best of the state’s programs? What about FSU? Is this the year the ‘Noles finally make a comeback or will the criticism simply heat up more on Coach Bobby Bowden. Let me know what you think.

I don’t think anything short of the kind of season Joe Paterno had will do much to silence all the critics. I’m still not enamored of Jeff Bowden as the O/C especially since I think he tends to try to be content with trying to take what the defense “gives” you instead of exploiting his incredibly talented skill players. Of course, if a subpar o-line really has been the problem and this year’s recruits can bolster it, maybe we’ll see another explosive offense.
Thanks for letting me rant!

Scott:
I was in Tampa this weekend for a wedding and got that same magazine. I was very surprised about the rankings and even more surprised about the Nole’s not even being picked their own division, with a very favorable schedule. I see four games that scare me - Miami, Clemson, N.C. State and Florida. I think we will win three of the four and if we get by Miami, I see N.C. State being the most dangerous because it is away on a Thursday night. I think the Nole’s are underrated, the Canes right on, and we will see about the Gators. Even if they are better than last year, their schedule is too tough to make it through unblemished and ranked 5th in the country.

Joe,
Thanks for the reply. You are the first official messenger on the new Seminoles blog. I wish I could say there was a prize involved, but just a thanks.
Anyway, you’re right about Florida. It will be very interesting if Leak falters early and the masses start calling for Tebow.

a lot of your questions will be answered labor day weekend after fsu and miami butt heads (not to be confused with “buttheads").
but i think florida might be a tad overrated. they won’t be bad, don’t get me wrong. but if leak struggles and the masses begin screaming for tim tebow, who knows how the season will play out for the gators.
the noles lost an awful lot on defense to the draft. how fsu replaces those guys will be the key to a very good season or a chick-fil-a bowl.

good point mike. as big and tall as carr is, weatherford should just throw the ball up to him time and again until some defensive back shows he can defend that pass.
if we in the stands can see it, and p.t. willis can see it from the broadcast booth, why can’t sonny bowden see the same thing?
