So what was it? Was it the collapse? Or was it deeper than that? Did it start when the team was 9-3?
I have a theory, but first, my answers to those questions. It was Jon Gruden. No, not the collapse. Yes, deeper. No, it started before the season even began. Blame it on Brett Favre. Not on Brett the man, but on Jon Gruden’s mancrush on him. Jeff Garcia had it right when he told you before the season that Jon Gruden dates QBs. He dates all of his offensive players. When they fall out of his good graces, they rarely see the field again. Think I’m kidding? Give Brad Johnson a call. Chris Simms? That’s old news? Okay, try Jeff Garcia. Joey Galloway. Michael Clayton. Shoot, give Michael Bennett a call in San Diego.
The team left Chucky. Their departure coincided with Monte Kiffin’s announcement. You make your own judgment on what that means. My take is that Mssr’s Glazer figured it out.
They were tuned in when Jim Irsay and Bill Polian wept over Tony Dungy’s retirement. These grown men balled. They had the coach of their dreams. Their players dreams. Their city’s dreams. Other NFL Owner’s dreams. They saw a coach whose players would - in fact, Warren Sapp even said it on the NFL Network - take a bullet for the guy. The Glazers looked back at their own organization and realized that not only were there no Bucs ready to take a bullet for their coach, there might have been a few desiring to fire one at him.
A $45 Million Dollar offseason in the hands of a coach that had lost his players? A toy fund for Gruden and Allen to spend? Not happening. Pink slips.
Now what? Go get Brett Favre! Of course, I’m kidding. No. A steady hand on the wheel. My choice is experience. I’m calling Tony Dungy first and offering him the farm. Certain that he’s not interested, I call Bill Cowher and Mike Shanahan. Many will make a case for Raheem Morris. I think he’s a little young and inexperienced. But, I could be wrong. Whomever it is, it will be an improvement in the eyes of our players.

A look at Gruden’s QBs.
Johnson was cut because of McKay’s mismanagement of the cap.
Griese was ok, but never got better.
Simms. Don’t get me started! There was a reason he slid in the draft. Ask any Big 12 fan and they will tell you he started at Texas because daddy bought buildings. Sooners cheered when he started because it meant a victory in the Red River Rivalry.
To be fair, he got better, but he never recovered from his spleen removal, and is now deep on someone’s bench.
Gradkowski wasn’t ready to be thrown in and paid the price.
Garcia was the best we’ve had, but he was old.
With Josh Johnson riding the pine Gruden was taking a stab at developing a young QB. JJ seems solid, and is probably our QB of tomorrow.

When a coach shouts 100’s of foul mouth four letter words at his players and to the officials that all can see on tv, this is not much of a coach or a man! His treatment of his players did not make for a very good locker room camaraderie! He kept favorites and let go of many good players that he should have kept! His high draft choices were very poor choices! Bottom line, I believe both of these guys should have left years earlier!

I agree! Grudo was never able to keep continuity on his offense, ‘specially at QB. What the Bucs needed was a steady hand at QB that had some confidence flowing from the coach, but he was never able to do that. He gave up on Chris Simms too soon and let him go even though he had some good things going for him. Jeff Garcia showed that he could do some solid things, but he played under the shadow of a coach who didn’t think he was spectacular enough for him to look like a “genius”.
Mike Shanahan wouldn’t be a bad bet, but Cowher is not going to come here. He is too committed to broadcasting right now.
This makes me miss Tony Dungy even more!!

Completely agree with the above comment, the internet is with a doubt growing into the most important medium of communication across the globe and its due to sites like this that ideas are spreading so quickly. I disagree with the above remark. I think in these tough economic times we need to rethink our old ways of thinking. Great Post. Does anyone know if there is a legal way I can display this content on my own website- thanks.
