Postmortem report from Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The season that couldn’t possibly get any worse did. Although University of South Florida coach Robert McCullum, senior James Holmes and junior Melvin Buckley didn’t agree, I think the Bulls quit at Providence. They lost by 21 to a Providence team that had won its other four Big East games by a total of 20 points. Perhaps, we should be surprised this kind of game didn’t happen earlier in the season but the string of losses and Big East schedule has finally taken its toll.

INSULT TO INJURY: McCullum said senior center Solomon Jones injured a knee during Sunday’s practice. The injury is not serious enough that it will require surgery, McCullum said, but limits Jones’ leaping ability. Jones also took an elbow to the mouth in the first half, requiring four stitches at halftime. Then before the game sophomore guard Collin Dennis was throwing up because of the flu. I have no idea how many Bulls threw up after that performance.

ANSWERING E-MAIL: “Why does McCullum still have a job? Seriously, I could probably coach this team better than he can. Enough of the BS about him being this great motivator. There are coaches out there, Quin Snyder, Mike Davis From Indiana, Bob Huggins that would be a perfect fit down here. We need an energetic coach and a young one to match the enthusiasm that Coach Leavitt has done with our football team. I mean really. Sincerely, One Disgusted Bulls Alumnus.”

Once again, Disgusted Bulls Alumnus, if you want a new coach then give USF about $600,000-$700,000 to pay off McCullum’s final three years and throw in another $1 million to help go toward paying the new coach.

ODDS AND ENDS: Trivia question: This is USF’s 35th season. How many 20-loss seasons have the Bulls had? Also, how many 20-win seasons? ... USF play-by-play announcer T.J. Rives’ take: “It’s the same story. The Bulls didn’t play well enough to beat a hungry team.” ... Trivia answer: This year marks the sixth 20-loss season in school history (1979-80, 1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89, 2003-04 and 2005-06). By comparison, USF has had only two 20-win seasons (1982-83 and 1989-90). ... With four NBA scouts in attendance Tuesday at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, Jones couldn’t have picked a worse game to have season lows in points (three) and rebounds (three).

Coach McCullum may be a great man, but that does not necessarily mean he is a great HEAD coach. Let’s face it, he comes from years as an assistant to Lon Kruger.  Brett—-The alumni doesn’t have to come up with the money. If they paid off McCullum over the next 3 years and hired COACH HUGGINS, they would make more than enough to pay McCullum off and pay Huggins and have a highly competetive men’s program in the interim.  He and Asst. Frank Martin (say Miami Hs…back to back state champs) would quickly out recruit the Gators and Noles. It would be an easier chore to acccomplish…only need 4 to 5 players for instant credibilty….HIRE COACH BOB HUGGINS before someone else does !!

Yes, Quinn Snyder is a perfect fit for the Bulls.  USF obviously wants a guy that cheats and still doesn’t win.  Seems like a match made in heaven.  Snyder actually is a perfect fit for a prison team, where he could reunite with Ricky Clemons.  USF fan, how about you go out and support the Bulls, and not be one of the 7500 empty seats that shows up for Bulls Games, then we can talk.  And I am guessing you haven’t been to too many games, because if you see the talent that Bob has to work with, then you would know that YOU wouldnt even have won 1 game this year.

This coach has had some tough times this year but they has never been very good. This guy will never bring in any big time recruits and usf is now in the big east. Just hire Bob Huggins and get some recruits and make i bet they make the tournament. He will put this school on the map.

Chula Chic Chak—i agree Snyder has never won. Huggins is the man.  Cinci had only 7 scholarship players stay after he left and their still winning. You say Coach McCullum doesn’t have the talent…No kidding. He cannot recruit with the Big Boys..great man but NOT HEAD COACH MATERIAL!  Hire Hugggins now

Dear NeilDeal,

You do realize that the NCAA is going to tie scholarships to players graduation rates?  How many Bob Huggins players graduated during his tenure at UC?  Any guess?  I will let you answer back to that, but besides having no commitment to academics, he had no commitment to society and was convicted of drunk driving.  I guess if that is the kind of guy you want, then I guess you have to question what college athletics are all about.  Bob can win, give him a chance to get some players.  You have no idea what kind of shape Seth Greenberg left this program in.  Who else would you suggest to take over besides Huggins?

Why does everyone think that hiring Huggins will fix what is wrong with this program?

USF has a combination of problems.  Some self inflicted poor recruiting choices and maybe poorer decisions yet from then AD Lee Roy Selmon, by not fully considering all head coaching options, as previously reported by Brett.  Other problems go back to when JUCO’s dominated the roster and players lacked discipline.  And yet other problems revolve around bad luck injuries.

I remember when many thought if Paschal were out of the way USF would improve and set it self up well for the future…..what did Greenberg ever do for USF?

A change at the top might change the looks of the program but it might not translate to a winning attitude.

Neildeal, why does the alumni have to pay for the contracts? Because the school has limited funds. Remember to save a few thousand dollars, the football team bused to Miami? USF also was the only Big East basketball team that didn’t charter to Notre Dame this year, instead flying to Chicago and busing to South Bend - again to save a few thousand dollars. Also, you’re well aware how poorly the coaches, especially the assistants are paid, at USF. As far as Huggins, I’ll repeat it again: he will not coach at USF next year. Yes, I think he would win here, but he took on a university president in the media, so he will have to find the right situation to return to coaching (like Mike Price, Larry Eustachy).

Each year there is an excuse as to why USF basketball does not do well. This year’s excuse is that it is our first year in the Big East. How many years is it going to be until we start winning. It has been well over 10 years since they have even made the NCAA tournament. It seems like if we do make the tournament then that is a huge accomplishment. Seth Greenberg was awful and I think that things are going in the wrong direction. It is an absolute disgrace and embarassment at how the program loses year after year. I am very frustrated in their performance and it seems like they have no intentions of improving anytime soon. Please share your thoughts with me. Thank you

Dear Brett and Chula: the answer is 11 out of the last 27 players. 9 of 12 off his final 4 team. The NCAA counts juco transfers as zero, even when they graduate on time. Thus,Soloman won’t count for us. Dui-yeah mistake..he apologized. Check out the dui(s)on our football staff, as well as JOhn Gruden in Oakland. Brett—Huggs will be in the big east..we came up with the $$ for Jimmy leavitt why not for a guy who has 14 straight appearances in the NCAA’s? Chula_ i haven’t missed a game in years..i do know what seth left us with…talk about committment to society..BeBe, Altron, baxter ??? c’mon get real or we will be the laughing stock in the league for years.. Go Bulls

I agree that coach Mac is coming back next season.  My question is, if they don’t make the Big East tourney next season can they afford to not dump him at that point?  And if they do, won’t they be in such a financial bind that they will have to go with an unproven assistant coach as a replacement?

While I agree with some of you in saying that Coach Mc will be back next year, I don’t think that every coach that is out there would be overpriced and out of USF’s range.

All we have to do is look at Matt Doherty at FAU.  Surely, FAU’s basketball budget is not more than ours and yet they still found a great recruiter and a good basketball coach to run their program.

MCCullum will be back and he will get more opportunities. However when it does come time for a change, USF does not need to hire the the most expensive coach to be successful. USF just needs to do good research and evaluation when seeking their new coach….something that AD Selmon failed to fully provide for USF at the time.

TK I think that’s a fair - and reasonable - assessment about next season. If USF doesn’t reach the Big East Tournament, Woolard probably will have to do something or watch an already eroding fan base vanish entirely. If the program hasn’t improved next season, I don’t think it’s whether USF can afford to make a change. They can’t afford not to. As far as where will the money come from: USF will have had a second season of BCS football money plus the added revenue from Big East football and basketball games.

I have never been to a USF basketball game and have no plans of ever attending.  Basketball is a lame stupid irrelevant sport in this state.  This is a football state.  UF will screw around and look good then get knocked out early in the tourney.  FSU and UM are competitive but never make the tourney.  What difference does this make?  We win none or go .500 like FSU and Miami.  Spend as little as possible on basketball and spend it all on football because football will pay dividends while basketball will never pay dividends.

Did someone actually say Matt Doherty? Think small, stay small. He did a great job at UNC !! Gosh, if he couldn’t win and recruit at UNC, then FAU is a great place for him to coach !

Por (Hector) on February 23, 2006 (Suggest removal)

Neildeal….not thinking small, just thinking affordable.

You want Huggins, way out of reach, and I suggest someone with good resume and more acceptable to USF’s budget.

Doherty actually has a nice history that takes him from Kansas to ND (should have stayed there) to UNC.  He is a master recruiter helping KU maintain their winning ways and he helped recruit the kids that won the title for UNC.

I did not say hire him or that we need to hire someone now but when the situation presents itself, USF does not need to hire the most expensive candidate just someone who has a proven record at the D-I level.

Hi Hector: thanks for your comments Huggs is not out of reach and anxious to get back in the Big East..you would be surprised….there is just not an opening here….if there is he can be had and a deal can be worked ...
