I am hoping my wife reads this and loads me up with some Doc’s Goofy Jigs, because the pompano bite on the south end of Tampa Bay is still on fire. Not sure if it’s the warm weather or just a great year, but we are catching really nice pompano on every trip.
All the areas that seem to be holding the most fish are close to really deep water and close to bridges. The bridges are a great place to start looking, and work your way to the flats from there. My favorites from Doc’s Goofy Jig’s are pink-and-white and chartreuse-and-white. Both work well.
This week, we did most of our damage on chartreuse-and-white. DOA CAL jigs in white and chartreuse will work, but some of the smaller pompano will not eat them because of the small size of the bait.
The trout bite remained hot, as well, yielding 50 to 60 days all week. We caught several 14- to 16-inch fish, but managed a handful of 20-inch fish each day. Again, it’s hard to beat artificials for these fish as they give you the ability to cover more water than live baits. The largest concentrations of trout seemed to be holding in 4 to 5 feet of water.
The redfish bite remained slow on the south end, but was consistent up inside the Bay. Finding the mullet is key.
