Plant’s bid for a national championship began today with a virtual tournament hosted by Massey and USA Today.

With a similar format used for the BCS rankings, high schools from across the country will face off with a champion crowned on Jan. 9. Plant, which is fresh off its third state title in four years, is seeded seventh in the South part of the bracket.
The Panthers beat Roebuck, South Carolina’s Dorman High in the first round, 12-7. St. Thomas Aquinas was ousted in the first round by Mississippi’s South Panola.
Next up for Plant in the second round is Kentucky’s Highland’s High School, the South’s No. 2 seed and the state’s 5A champions.
