Plant’s football team kicked off the summer 7-on-7 tournament action with a victory at the University of Central Florida.

The Panthers defeated Armwood in the finals of UCF’s annual 7-on-7 tournament. Along the way to the championship match, Plant also beat Gaither, American Heritage, South Lake, Pompano Beach Ely and an all-star team from south Florida called Hard Knocks. The Panthers emerged from pool play after a loss to Dunnellon.
Plant beat Armwood in the final play of the game. With the game tied at 14, Plant quarterback Phillip Ely hit wideout Scott Greacen on the goal line for the touchdown as the buzzer sounded. Greacen was one of many Plant starters, including James Wilder, Jr., who missed the beginning of the tournament because of SAT testing.
“It was a good game,” Plant coach Robert Weiner said. “They scored first and then we scored, but missed the extra point. We scored again and went for two to go up 14-7 and then they scored with three-and-half minutes to go. Then Scott Greacen shows up from taking his SAT and scores the winning touchdown. It was a great confidence boost for our guys.”
Next up for Plant is USF’s 7-on-7 tournament next weekend and the fifth annual Heath Evans Foundation 7-on-7 Championship in West Palm Beach on Saturday. There will be a split squad for both those events. Then next month, they will travel to Oregon and compete in Nike’s annual 7-on-7 tournament, an event the Panthers won in 2008.
