Pierre-Paul or Tebow? Mel Kiper Says ...

Imagine for a second that you are Wayne Weaver, owner of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.
Your franchise has lost its luster. On most Sundays at home, the stadium is half-empty. There is talk that one day your team could be called the Los Angeles Jaguars.
However, in a couple of months, the NFL Draft will provide a temptation that could be hard to resist. Perhaps the most valuable player in franchise history—a left-handed quarterback named Mark Brunell—is now putting off retirement by serving as Drew Brees’ back-up in New Orleans.
However, with the 11th pick in the draft, another left-handed QB should be available if you’re dreaming of rebooting your franchise with another unlikely leader the way you did 15 years ago with Brunell.
Oh, and there is a bonus: Tim Tebow happens to be from Jacksonville, which would likely send season-ticket sales rocketing.
Only problem is that most draft experts would call you crazy for picking Tebow so high.
In fact, ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. had this to say about your 11th pick in the draft: “This is no place to draft a guy like Tim Tebow just to sell tickets.’‘
Who does Kiper have you picking? Jason Pierre-Paul.
Click here to read Kiper’s first mock draft of the year.
As for Pierre-Paul, the former USF defensive end who was virtually unknown nationally a year ago at this time, he might not sell as many tickets as Tebow, but Kiper believes he would be the better player.
In fact, Pierre-Paul is a virtual lock barring an injury during pre-draft workout season to become USF’s highest-draft player in school history.
Former USF defensive back Mike Jenkins, selected with the 25th overall pick by Dallas in 2008, currently holds that distinction.
Who will be USF’s highest-drafted player after Pierre-Paul this season?

It kills me when people don’t think of the sports entertainment business as a business. And entertyainment. And oh, by the way, sports. If it were a hollywood movie, who can headline the thing and get the most butts in seats for your premier? Bradd Pitt? Bruce Willis? Ahnuld? So that’s who you put in there. Jacksonville sells out the stadium and increases season ticket sales with Tebow, then he gets the gig. Great defense doesn’t sell tickets like great offense, but NOBODY in Jacksonville knows who Pierre-Paul is. Financially, Tebow could save the franchise for a few years. I’d do it. Besides, he just might be good.

One more thing: among the many legendary stories about Tebow is one that goes unnoticed. When he gave his “The promise” speech, he promised to do a lot of things, including work harder. Lifting more weights and watching more film would fly under the radar compared to who he’s dating and whether he’s a virgin, but I felt the guy made a major public commitment to improve himself in all areas of the sport, and with good coaching I believe he has the singular dedication to do it again - learn more and try harder to become better, for the next level. I think his work ethic will make him a good QB in the NFL, and it’ll be fun to watch what happens.

I would love it if both of those guys go in round 1 - great publicity for the program

For once I disagree with you Dan. Only if Tebow turns out to be one of the better starting qb’s in the NFL would that pick turn out well. What really sells tickets are wins. Plain and simple. I see it every day with my koozie sales. The Saints are terrible selling team but SURPRISE…their stuff is selling like crazy right now. People love a winner and will pay to see one, whether it comes by a golden virgin qb or a de that nobody’s heard of.
Besides, who doesn’t love watching a monster de causing havok on the opposing qb?
Selvie will be next to go after Pierre-Paul. I feel bad that he lost a lot of money by staying in school an extra year. You never want it to work out that way.
