TAMPA – Bucs free agent safety Jermaine Phillips is starting to line up some visits with rival clubs.
Phillips, who is still negotiating with the Bucs but is looking to get a better read on his market value, has visits with the Chargers and Seahawks lined up.
We’re not sure exactly when Phillips will make these visits but the next few days seems a likely possibility.
The Bucs have been focusing primarily on reshaping their offense during the early days of free agency.
That approach will probably start to change very soon, what with Phillips and free agent cornerback Phillip Buchanon now looking elsewhere.
Buchanon is expected to visit the Detroit Lions today.

We need to re sign both of these guys. They are still young and each are very physical. I like Sabby Piscitelli against the pass but he just isn’t as good as Phillips is against the run. The run killed our defense in the last four games. Brooks and Barber are getting old and couldn’t keep runners from getting into the third level of the defense. Don’t forget the game in KC when Jamaal Charles ran for over 100 yards against us when Phillips was out. Sure it seems like Phillips gets hurt a lot but I would much rather have him play 12 games a year for us than 0.

i think you can let these 2 walk. buchanon is asking for big dollars, and frankly i think he is very replaceable and didnt impress me. phillips is 30, cant stay healthy, and is vulnerable against the pass. with the bucs trying to get bigger and more physical up front and at linebacker, i think they will be better off going with a faster more athletic coverage safety in piscitelli. he has shown some very good ball hawking skills. if the bucs can get more pressure on the qb, he will continue to learn and i think will be very solid. the bucs are being very meticulous, which IS the smart way to spend your money in free agency. championships are built through the draft. there is a lot of upside here. keep it up. GO BUCS!

You have to trust Morris and Dominik know what they are doing. They aren’t new to the team and the players. They know the players so its not like they are making decisions without first hand knowledge.

Phillips is a quality DB who would be hard to replace. He is worth a three year investment. Buchanon can walk. He turns left when he should have turned right. Doesn’t appear to have that inner instinct.

I don’t care about Buchanon, think he can be replaced without problems but Phillips is someone who tampa really needs, Piscatelly didn’t look that good as his replacement.

The Bucs need a 3rd corner. Barber like Brooks last year showed that they lost a step.
Barber, Talib, and Buchanon/Greer would be great.

The one guy i said we have to focus on resigning now that brooks is gone besides ruud he’s the leader on this defense we need to focus on resigning him to a long term deal and start the rebuild on defense!

phil hit the nail on the head. the reason we got ran all over is not because phillips wasnt in, its because our front 7 got man-handled. wake up people its a new era at safety, even bill bellicheck said. the run is won at the line of scrimmage. you cant rely on a safety that cant go a whole season without breaking their arm to stop the run. and whatd you mean piscitelli isnt ready? he is CLEARLY a better cover safety then phillips. how do you expect a safety to cover for 10 seconds? i have a lot of respect for kiffin and he was real high on this guy. we need to dominate the line of scrimmage, thats how championships are won. you guys need to get a clue seriously…

Yea Mike, Kiffin was high on Piscitelli, for his defensive scheme. Jim Bates runs a different scheme. I know Phillips is a product of Kiffin too but the fact remains that Phillips is better against the run than Piscitelli and our run defense stunk it up last year. You can’t tell me that we have gotten better at defending the run by subtracting players. And just because Bill Belichick says something that means it is 100% true? Come on man. No offense but I just have to disaggree with you on this.

The run is won at the line, with all those big fellows? How insightfull, thanks for giving us a clue

tyler i see what your saying and i respect phillips but the guy cant go a season without getting injured, hes 30, and piscitelli is faster and more athletic. im saying that instead of focusing on signing phillips, we need to focus on bringing in a guy like angelo crowell and getting bigger up front. im not saying our defense is good to go, im saying that our prioretys need to be adressed at getting bigger and more physical at linebacker and DT, because that is the biggest reason we got so exposed our front 7 couldnt shed a block and couldnt tackle, phillips wasnt the x factor if that makes any sense to you..

Mike,
Suggest removalI would deffinately aggree with you on signing Angelo Crowell and taking a look at Tank Johnson. I just don’t see why we can’t get all three of those guys with the money we have under the cap. I could also see us going after Roy Williams now and moving Sabby to CB. Just a thought.

I was seriously thinking of looking up some of them newspaper websites, but am glad I came here instead. Although glad is not quite the right word… let me just say I needed this after the incessant chatter in the media, and am grateful to you for articulating something many of us are feeling - even from distant shores.
