PG Crater dismissed from men’s hoops team

USF senior point guard Anthony Crater has been dismissed from the men’s basketball team for violating team rules, Bulls coach Stan Heath announced Monday.

“I am disappointed for Anthony,” Heath in a prepared statement. “He is a good young man, who made a number of positive contributions to our program, but he made some mistakes and was unable to meet our team’s standard. I am hopeful he will learn from this experience and achieve great things in the future.”

Crater spent the last two seasons with the Bulls after transferring from Ohio State. He played in 30 of USF’s 33 games in 2010-11, making 29 starts, and led the team in assists, averaging 4.6 per game. He was injured during the final game of last season, suffering a separated shoulder in the final moments of the first half in a loss to Cincinnati in the Big East Conference tournament in New York.

Heath heavily recruited the point guard position for next season, signing Westbury Christian (Texas) High’s Anthony Collins and Williston State (N.D.) College’s Blake Nash for the 2011-12 season. The Bulls also have another point guard on the roster in sophomore LaVonte Dority.

Crater is the third scholarship player to leave the Bulls program since the season ended. Backup guards Mike Burwell and Shedrick Haynes are transferring to Towson and Tarleton State, respectively.
