This is the time of year when trade speculation begins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are involved in a very unlikely scenario.
Over the weekend, Foxsports.com reported Tampa Bay and St. Louis discussed the possibility of sending the Bucs No. 3 overall pick, a third rounder and quarterback Josh Johnson to St. Louis in exchange for the No. 1 overall selection. Click here to read that story: Eyes Still On Two DTs
However, after learning about that report, Sports Illustrated writer Peter King dismissed that trade possibility during his Monday Morning QB column today Monday Morning QB
King wrote:
“I think I would be shocked—as would the St. Louis Rams, quite frankly—if the Bucs were remotely serious about trading up to number one in the draft from their spot at three. If you haven’t noticed in the last 15 months, the Bucs are shedding salary the way I wish I could shed pounds, which is to say, with consistent regularity. Paying JaMarcus Russell money ($39 million in the first three years of his Oakland deal) to a defensive tackle would blow everyone in the league away. As one source with knowledge of the inner workings of each team said to me in a text the other night when I asked about the chances of the Bucs and Rams dealing: “About the same as Colgate joining the Big East.”
I got to agree with King on this one.
The Bucs wasted a lot of money on free agents who didn’t pan out last year, so I can’t see them going on a spending tons of money on Suh’s contract. The Bucs also think Josh Johnson can be a decent backup for many years, so shipping him away and having nothing in return does not make sense, especially since Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson fought to keep him on the team last year.
Right now, Tampa Bay appears to be very content with its No.3 overall pick, but if the Bucs could trade down, acquire more trade picks and save money, they would.
