Rays Report
Forum: Talk Rays
Perez in there as Rays try to get one

TORONTO—Joe Maddon has been sufficiently impressed by what he has seen from Fernando Perez in a couple of late-inning cameos the last two days to give the speedster a start today as the Rays look to avert a series sweep at the hands of the Blue Jays.

To do so, they’ll have to find a way to solve Toronto starter David Purcey, who has a 6.15 ERA in nine starts this year but dominated the Rays at the Trop a couple of weeks ago, allowing one run and striking out 11 in eight innings.

For your daily Evan Longoria update, the third baseman took a total of 60 swings this morning: two sets of 15 off the tee along with 15 “dry” swings with a regular bat and 15 with a fungo bat. He’s expected to take soft toss tomorrow, then perhaps regular batting practice Tuesday. Maddon said Longoria’s goal of returning to the lineup Friday against the Yankees remains “reasonable,” but they’ll have to wait and see how he does the next few days.

Here are the lineups:

Garza P
