The Rays agreed to terms today with RHP Joel Peralta on a one-year contract, thus avoiding arbitration with a key member of the 2011 bullpen.
Peralta, who will be 36 in March, had career-highs in appearances (71), wins (3), losses (4) and saves (6).
Four of those six saves came in September while filling in for Kyle Farnsworth.
His 71 appearances led the Rays and were the second-most among AL relievers.
Peralta held first batters to a major league-best .072. According to Stats Inc., that is the second to Mariano Rivera’s .048 mark in 1999 since records became available in 1974.
He held left-handers to a .155 average, the second-lowest average in the majors last season and the best in team history.
Seventeen of his final 18 appearances were scoreless. He allowed only 10 base runners while striking out 20 over that stretch.
