ST. PETERSBURG Carlos Pena did not make himself available to reporters before today’s game, but manager Joe Maddon said Pena’s sore right foot felt better this morning.
“He came in today not as sore as he thought he would be, so that’s good news,” Maddon said. “And actually Zoby felt better today, and that’s good news. I thought today could have been the day that we’d have said, ‘Well so and so is going to be on the DL or definitely not going to be on the DL.’ Probably have to wait until tomorrow to really narrow that down, so we’re going to have to play with two guys short today. That’s just the way it is. They’re tweener injuries. There’s no seven-day DL that permits you to really maneuver in these situations, so what are you going to do?”
The MRI on Pena’s right foot Saturday night showed some inflammation.
Zobrist said his stiff lower back is “significantly better,” but isn’t sure when he’ll return.
He’s hoping to takes some swings Monday. If so, the Rays will see how his back feels Tuesday before deciding if he can play Wednesday or Thursday.
