ST. PETERSBURG Carlos Peña could return to action as early as Thursday in a pinch-hitting role, manager Joe Maddon said.
Peña put his injured right foot through some drills before tonight’s game and will do so against before Thursday’s 12:10 start with the Twins. If everything goes well, Maddon said he could use the left-handed slugger as a pinch-hitter.
Peña has a small tear in the plantar fascia ligament that stretches across the bottom of his foot. He’s been told he can’t do any further damage by playing on it.
“It’s all about pain tolerance from now on, and I’m tolerating it very well. It’s just going to come down to how much pain can I take,” Peña said. “As we go out and do the exercises, that’s what I’m trying to find out. If I’m running and I don’t fall to the ground because it’s painful than it means I can do it. That’s how it goes. You try different things and find out what’s painful.”
Maddon thinks Peña could return to the starting lineup Saturday afternoon against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
“If everything is well at that time we’ll decide to either DH him or play him at first base one or two, if everything keeps progressing this way,” Maddon said. “Without any setbacks that’s what it looks like.”
