ST. PETERSBURG - Pena bounces to first in the eighth inning. Unless the Rays rally, it doesn’t look like Pena’s going to extend his streak of homers in consecutive games to seven.
Marlins take a 6-1 lead into the 9th.
—-
Pena took a called third strike to open the sixth. He’s 0-for-3.
What’s more, the Marlins rocked Jeff Niemann for two home runs and four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.
Yankees are beating Houston in the Bronx, so the Rays need to rally over the next three innings to remain in first place.
—-
Pena gave the fans inside the Trop a brief thrill when he sent a fly ball to right field in the fourth inninning. Not nearly deep enough.
Carl Crawford did tag and go to third on Pena’s soft liner to right.
Pena grounded to first in his first at-bat.
Pena is looking to join Kevin Mench of Texas (2006) and Jim Thome of Cleveland (2002), who both homered in seven straight games.
——
Carlos Pena enters this afternoon’s game with the Marlins chasing the major league record for most consecutive games with a home run and hoping to get his average above .200.
