K.J. Walker honored more than his mother when he strapped on his specially-made helmet at Monday’s practice. By sporting the Army fatigue designed helmet, he honored every military service man and woman who has sacrificed to help protect the country.
Walker received the helmet, which was specially made for him, before school Monday morning. It was sitting on a table in Coach Robert Weiner’s office when he arrived before classes. Weiner’s trying to find out if Walker can wear it during Thursday’s game against Robinson.
Walker’s mother was recently deployed to Afghanistan, but before she left, the team honored her at their game against Wharton. She was presented with a Plant necklace and flowers and was overcome with emotion by the generosity.
“I’ve haven’t seen my mom cry like that in a long time,’’ Walker said.
He hears from his mother nearly every morning when she calls him at 5 a.m.
“It’s my wake-up call,’’ he said. “My mom’s doing her part to help keep the whole world safe and she keeps me and my dad in her prayers. She’ll be fine.’’
Thursday night’s game will have a military theme. Weiner will be honored at halftime by the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Game for his selection as the East team’s head coach.
