MIAMI – Joe Maddon was in his office Saturday afternoon when he heard the commotion in the visiting clubhouse at Sun Life Stadium.
David Price went down.
The Rays lefty, scheduled to start Sunday against the Marlins, was playing catch in the outfield with Wade Davis while the Marlins took batting practice, placing the pair in direct line with a well-struck line drive should one be struck in his direction.
Naturally, Maddon assumed the worst.
“I’m thinking head, blood, concussion,” Maddon said. “Then I see them all laughing as I’m going out there and I’m thinking, what’s going on here? It’s funny right? It’s funny to everybody but the guy on the ground.”
Price was on the ground because Davis bounced a throw that short-hopped Price and hit him in the … ah … groin area.
Price, who leads the American League in wins (10) and ERA (2.31), left the stadium around game time and returned to the team hotel for some rest. He said through a team’s spokes person that he will be able to make his start Sunday.
“I was throwing with Wade. He threw a changeup that had some really good depth to it and it got under my glove and bounced up and got me. I’m not feeling great right now, but I should be OK tomorrow,” Price said.
Apparently, Price squatted and called for a change-up from Davis.
“Apparently Wade threw a pretty good changeup and it was miscalculated on the receiving end,” Maddon said.
Price was helped off the field and went to the trainer’s room. He made a brief appearance by his locker before heading back to the trainer’s room.
“It’s one of those really unusual moments, but I’m sure he’s fine,” Maddon said. “For all you males out there you know exactly what that feels like, and you know it’s no good.”
And if there is a lesson to be gained from Price’s pain, Maddon said it is this: “Wear a cup. Always wear a cup when you go on a baseball field.”
