Shortly after the New Year rings, the Chamberlain High School football team should have a new football coach.

Chamberlain principal Thomas Morrill, in an e-mail to The Tampa Tribune, said they are currently reviewing resumes for the position left open after Joe Severino retired after three seasons at the helm, and they hope to select coaches to bring before a committee at the beginning of January.

“We should have a coached named shortly thereafter,” Morrill said in the email.

Severino took over the position in June 2009 after John Colbert resigned less than two months after being named the Chamberlain coach to replace Billy Turner. Turner spent 30 years as the Chiefs coach, winning a Hillsborough County-best 254 games, achieving 25 winning seasons and 17 playoff appearances. In all he coached 38 years.

There have been 27 applicants for the open position, including Blake coach Harry Hubbard, former Leto coach Hugh Dehnert, former Gaither coach Mark Kantor and former Chiefs defensive coordinator Danny Persaud.

Applying for the position are: Isaac Anderson, Josh Ballinger, Bruce Barberi, Tony Beckham, Michael Burns, Keith Chattin, Hugh Dehnert, Anthony Givins, Kenneth Hartless, Dale Herman, Harry Hubbard, Steven Humphrey, Ronald Johnson, Mark Kantor, David Lawrence, Niel Loebig, James Marlock, Dedrick Mayo, Greg Meyer, Ashour Peera, Danny Persaud, Trevor Porter, Elbert Shumake, Brandon Siska, Tom Thenell, Hal Walker and Joshua Weber.
