TAMPA—This time around, Greg Olson has the paintbrush in his hand from Day 1.
No more awkward transitions from the offensive principles Jeff Jagodzinski had installed before his abrupt dismissal last summer.
With an entire offseason to implement his attack, Tampa Bay’s second-year offensive coordinator has created a new blueprint for the Buccaneers and quarterback Jose Freeman. In retrospect, Jagodzinski’s firing on the brink of the 2009 season opener against Dallas proved to be too difficult to overcome for Olson and a confused offensive line that underachieved.
There was no time for Olson to scrap Tampa Bay’s offensive scheme, so he was forced to improvise on the fly. Ironically, the offense looked terrific against the Cowboys in Week 1 before the Bucs stumbled to a 3-13 mark while failing to establish an offensive identity.
“It’s going to be a more unified approach,’’ Coach Raheem Morris says of Tampa Bay’s new game plan under Olson. “Last year, we were putting it in during the season and now we’ve got a chance for all the coaches to sit down and Coach Olson to say what he wants and do what he wants. Now you get to present it to your players and they will be to go out there and execute.’‘
Offensive line coach Pete Mangurian says he and Olson and in synch on Tampa Bay’s philosophy. With all five starters expected to return, Mangurian expects his unit to play with more consistency in front of Freeman.
“This is our offense now,’’ he says. “It’s not this guy’s or that guy’s offense ... it’s our offense. When we’re all on the same page, that trickles down to the players. They’re held accountable and it’s all very clear what they’re supposed to be doing.’‘
