PITTSBURGH—Aside from the view, my favorite part about PNC Park is the Great Pierogi Race.
Sure, it’s a knockoff of the Sausage Race in Milwaukee and numerous other teams have copied it. But there’s no question the pierogies have more character than the soulless Pepsi commercial that passes for entertainment at the Trop, and the Pirates put a lot more into it with with a rather elaborate computer-generated intro on the scoreboard that precedes the actual running of the pierogies each day.
We had quite a showdown at the finish line today, with Oliver Onion edging out Jalapeno Hannah at the wire—apparently to the dismay of the Pirate. I always feel Hannah is at a disadvantage because she has to carry a purse. Sauerkraut Saul finished a very distant third, with my personal favorite, Cheese Chester, bringing up the rear in a dreadful performance.
There’s always next time, Chester!
