TALLAHASSEE – Behind University of South Florida freshman quarterback B.J. Daniels and a strong defensive effort, the Bulls upset No. 18 Florida State 17-7 Saturday afternoon.

The victory was the first ever for the Bulls (4-0) against one of the state’s Big Three schools. The Seminoles (2-2, coming off a 54-28 win at BYU, were held scoreless by USF until the fourth quarter.

The game was played before 83,524, the 11th largest crowd in Doak Campbell Stadium history and third-largest to witness a USF game and included a record 12,000 USF fans, the most for a USF road game.

Trailing 14-0, Ty Jones’ 3-yard touchdown run cut USF’s lead in half to 14-7 with 13:35 remaining.

Making his first start for injured senior Matt Grothe, Daniels threw touchdown passes to Ben Busbee for 8 yards and Sterling Griffin for 73 yards, giving USF a 14-0 halftime lead.

Daniels finished the first half 4-for-9 for 166 yards and two TDs, while carrying 10 times for 87 yards

In the first quarter, both teams failed to convert scoring opportunities. After an FSU fumble, USF’s Eric Schwartz was wide left on a 37-yard field goal. The Seminoles had a first-and-goal at the 3, but the Bulls stopped the Seminoles on two runs inside the 2.

Daniels then drove the Bulls 99 yards in five plays – the big play a 77-yard pass to Theo Wilson to the FSU 8 – giving the Bulls a 7-0 lead.

USF’s defense came up big again, forcing an FSU fumble inside USF’s 10. Sabbath Joseph caused the fumble and Kion Wilson returned it to USF’s 27.

On the next play, Daniels hit Griffin, who was wide open down the USF sideline, for his second TD pass, making it 14-0.

Schwartz missed two first half field goals, both from 37 yards.

At the half, the Bulls outgained FSU 273-193.

After watching that game, and knowing how strong the USF defense is in general, I can’t believe you thought they’d put up 41 points on them.  This was an incredible defensive effort.  That D-Line is for real

Enjoy this victory for what it was - whatever it was. The ESPN guys are already saying that FSU beat themselves and that FSU is an up and down team. Well, so are the Bulls. I guess the Noles all had the flu. Now we can focus on the State’s other pretender, Miami, who is being decimated 24-7 by Virginia Tech as I write. That’s okay, these games are played for pride not rankings, and we owe Miami one. USF’s biggest opponent this year is Cincy, who may well be on the way to a National Championship. Noles fans had pretty big mouths last week. This evening, your silence is deafening. Say hello to being unranked, FSU, and say hello to THE BULLS. See ya in RayJay for the rematch.

Exactly. The Bulls D-line is deep and lethal and maybe their most talented player, Ryne Giddins, was not even used today!

It pains you to write this Murphy, doesn’t it?  I loved your previous headline about the game “finally” selling out, connotating lack of interest, yet it’s the 11th largest crowd at Doak. Leavitt and the Bulls are going to continue to expose your reporting biases.

Wow!  How about that defense?!  I thought they’d be the story, but not in a positive way.  Letting some of the inferior teams gain a lot of yards on us, I feared FSU would be able to do the same.  Especially with an inexperienced secondary.  Boy was I wrong, and gladly so.  I didn’t get to see the game, but listened via the internet and it sounded like the USF defense just laid a whooping on FSU’s offense.  Awesome game! And the USF fans sounded as loud or louder than the FSU fans for most of the game.

Huge win and again, another big upset by the Bulls! Win should give Big East more credibility? My critques: the kicking game - FGs that is.  Schwartz needs to get left hash mark FG kick down; what was with call on the pooch (sp?) kick in 4th qtr that gave FSU great field position? How about a line drive type kick but further down field?; what was reason for the time out by Bulls late 4th qtr when needed time to run off clock?; why handoff to smallest RB when ball is on our own one yard line?  Why not hand that off to Ford instead?; why didnt they use Ford more ofen?  Positives: Daniels has great speed; super defense; Alvarado was excellent punting - especially 50+ yarder from own endzone!

We have been here before, this won’t mean a thing if the Bulls don’t win the Big East.
