Some interesting news came out of the Tampa Bay Storm’s offices on Monday.
FIrst was that Tampa Bay assistant coach Pat O’Hara has interviewed for the head coaching vacancy in Los Angeles.
Second was that second-year receiver Hank Edwards, who had a breakout season in 2008, was among two Storm players to agree to a new deal.
A team spokesperson confirmed the news Monday evening.
The biggest news was perhaps the Storm giving Edwards a new deal, which Coach Tim Marcum called a priority in his final session with the local media. Edwards totaled 85 receptions for 1,348 yards and 30 touchdowns in 13 games this season, his yardage and touchdown totals both team highs. Edwards was set to become a free agent following the 2009 season.
Defensive back Byron Jones, who was set to become a free agent, also agreed to a new deal, the spokesperson confirmed.
In addition, receiver/kick returner Sedrick Robinson, who also was set to become a free agent, also re-signed with the Storm, according to the league’s transactions.
The terms and length of the three players’ contracts/extensions were not immediately available.
O’Hara, regarded as one of the top assistants in the Arena Football League, interviewed for the Avengers opening last week. He recently completed his third season as the Storm’s offensive coordinator.
Los Angeles coach Ed Hodgkiss and his entire staff was fired shortly after completing a 5-11 season, which ended with a loss to the Storm in Tampa. Hodgkiss was 58-58 overall during his tenure with the Avengers, with just a 1-5 mark in postseason play.
O’Hara, who also was a former AFL player and played in five ArenaBowls and on three AFL championship teams, interviewed at the end of last season for openings in Arizona and Grand Rapids. He was one of three finalists for the Rampage’s job.
O’Hara has not interviewed for any other head coaching vacancy since the season ended, according to a Storm spokesperson.
