Of golf and baseball

You know the theory about games played on get-away days? How every batter swings at the first pitch, so they can move the game along and catch their flight out of town?

It will be a little like that today.

The Rays took the fields at 9 a.m. and are scheduled to come off at 10: 30.

The short work day is the result of the Rays annual charity golf tournament, which begins at noon at The Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club in Bradenton. Buses leave at 11.

This is the big fundraiser for the Rays Baseball Foundation.

All the big names are playing. Expect Andy Sonnanstine’s foursome to do very well. He’s considered one of the best golfers in the team. Evan Longoria is pretty good, too. He’s played the Bob Hope Classic during the past two offseasons. Dan Wheeler and James Shields can also swing the sticks.

Manager Joe Maddon? Not so much.

“I’m ready to go out there and lose some baseballs,” Maddon said.

Golf is popular among baseball players. But not all baseball players.

Here is a famous quote by Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby:

“I don’t like golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to chase it.”

Here are a few more thoughts on golf by baseball players courtesy of the Quote Garden ...

“In baseball you hit your home run over the right-field fence, the left-field fence, the center-field fence. Nobody cares. In golf everything has got to be right over second base.”
- Ken Harrelson

“It took me seventeen years to get 3,000 hits. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.”
- Hank Aaron

“You can’t call it a sport. You don’t run, jump, you don’t shoot, you don’t pass. All you have to do is buy some clothes that don’t match.”
- Steve Sax
