TAMPA – Mike Nugent’s cold foot has put him on the hot seat.
Though a change is not imminent, the Bucs have to be concerned about Nugent’s lack of consistency on field-goals tries and consider re-signing Matt Bryant is still available.
Nugent had one kick blocked and missed horribly on another in the Bucs opening-day loss to the Cowboys last week. The miss was the fourth for Nugent since the start of the preseason.
Nugent has performed very well on kickoffs, regularly driving the ball into the end zone, but putting points on the board is more important than kicking off.
Sunday’s game against Buffalo could prove to be a rather big one for Nugent.
Another bout of inconsistency could result in a change at the position, and it’s likely that Bryant, who set a team record for points (131) and tied a team record for field goals (32) last year, would get the first call.
Bryant was with the Bucs all through training camp and the preseason but was cut after a hamstring injury prohibited him from kicking in any of the exhibition games.
Bryant said that likely would be back at 100 percent by the end of the first or second week of the regular season. If he meets that goal, it may not be long before he’s back in a Bucs uniform.
