Now the Lightning have acquired Rolston!!!!!

The Lightning didn’t stop at just Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts, acquiring the rights to negotiate with pending unrestricted free agent Brian Rolston from the Minnesota Wild for a conditional draft pick, which was not available at press time. Rolston, 35, has scored at least 31 goals in each of his three seasons in Minnesota where he played with new Lightning assistant coach Wes Walz. Rolston is regarded as a top-level, two-way player capable of running the point on the power play, being a top penalty kill and owns one of the top slap shots by a forward in the league.

More details as they become available.

UPDATE

OK, here are the details from the Lightning on the draft pick. I’m just going to cut and paste this because I think you might need a law degree or a master’s from Yale to understand it all. But here it goes:

The Wild trades the rights to player Brian Rolston to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Tampa Bay’s own 3rd round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft.

(a) If at any time before the commencement of the 2009 Entry Draft Tampa Bay acquires a 4th Round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft, Tampa Bay shall assign that 4th round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft to Minnesota in return for Tampa Bay’s own 3rd round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft.

(b) If Tampa Bay signs Brian Rolston for any portion of the 2008-2009 NHL season, AND the transfer described in paragraph (a) above has occurred, the Wild shall return the 4th round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft from paragraph (a) to Tampa Bay, AND Tampa Bay shall transfer to the Wild the option of:

(i) San Jose’s 3rd round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft (currently held by Tampa Bay), OR

(ii) Tampa Bay’s own 3rd Round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft

The option shall be exercised by the Wild, at the latest, when Tampa Bay’s turn to exercise San Jose’s 3rd round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft is called from the podium.

UPDATE 2

Here’s a quote from owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie from the team’s press release:

“As we said earlier this week and we are trying to prove after making our deal with Pittsburgh yesterday, we will work feverishly to improve the Lightning team for the 2008-09 season,” owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie said. “We believe getting the Lightning a head start in the negotiating and signing process can help us secure the players we are targeting. Nothing is guaranteed here, but we hope to have a chance to get another quality player in a Lightning uniform sooner rather than later.”

A Boyle Trade makes little sense considering his new deal, no trade clause and the fact the Lightening are already doing Marketing “See Vinny, Marty, Dan and Stamkos.  It would be tough to move him under all those circumstances.  Rumor mongering.  Besides didn’t Melrose say that one of the ways you intimidate is with speed?  Dan brings it out of the back fast!

Why is TSN mentioning moving Boyle? Because it’s summer and Canadians have nothing else to do but go camping and fantasize that the Laffs will one day win another Stanley Cup! ...42 years and going strong!

WHY does TSN keep saying Boyle is on the Block??

Posted by  Scully, Tampa on 06/30  at  09:48 AM

Where’s the defense?

I’m impressed! I wonder how many more moves they want to make? They said they were gonna be ‘shockingly aggressive’
And I love it so far, They have sure have the NHL buzzing a bit this past week.

I think that with a more conventional defensive set up (i.e., not having the defense play at the opposing goal crease), we might not have as many odd man breaks.  On the other hand, if they teach Boyle how to play an odd man break, there might not be as many shots on goal, hence fewer goal.

In any case, I don’t think that Smith has proven anything yet.  He may have potential; but, as Darrel Royal used to say - potential means he ain’t done nothing yet.

wow Koules is making Mark Cuban look tame

Mike, I am not sure if your Vezina Tropy comment was made towards me or not, never mentioned goaltending in the message.  I did mention in a prior message that I do believe the circumstances that surrounded Smith last year....ie being traded for Richards, the players on the team uncertain of ownership stability as well as Torts fighting through adversity of losing.  I do believe in Smith and or Ramo (but, I believe they will make a move for a vet goalie) can do the job.  Ehh....defense did play bad yes, but with much better two way defenders it makes it easier to play.  Also, what typ of “SYSTEM” will Melrose play with concerns to defensively???

Posted by  Tim Halstead, Oldsmar on 06/29  at  10:51 PM

ok guys i dont think we really need to get anymore defensemen, we got the scoring we need we have mike smith, and whoever we sign in free agency. and am i the only one that realized last year that the defense and the whole team quit in about january they didnt want torts back and i really questioned his system, and also alot of the defense is forwards getting back.

In the last few years, the Lightning have finished last in the league in goal tending.  What makes you think that we have a Vezina Trophy candidate now?

Even Mike Lundin, as a rookie, played better defense than the super stud Kuba.  That doesn’t speak too well for the defense.

I don’t think that the moves made so far will stop many goals, and I do think we need some help there.

Love it...absolutely love the move.  If they can sign him Rolston is extremely versatile on all fronts from leadership, goal scorer, power play, one of the best short handed goal scorers as well as top 10 speed guys still in the league....all this to mentor Stamkos....smart, smart moves.  Lock up the young guys and keep the vets here long enough to make Tampa a serious contender starting next year.  Now let us hear the detractors stating we have no goalie or defense.  Just hope that Boyle is not moved.

Ruthe, you are an astute lady.  Uncle Fester doesn’t have this kind of .....s.

This is a better day than most of the game days have been in the last couple of years.

We don’t need much more on offense, now let’s deal with Kuba.

Posted by  Ruthe, St Pete on 06/29  at  10:13 PM

Why do I get the feeling that Feaster was not in on any of these deals.

Posted by  Brittany, Orlando on 06/29  at  10:08 PM

This is absolutely crazy! They aren’t even waiting for free agency to begin to be “shockingly aggressive.” So much for camping out in players back yards. Where are all of those nay-sayers now who said OK didn’t have the money to pay any players?? These past couple of weeks have been more exciting than all of last season! I can’t wait to see what happens next season.

Holy Schnikey!

This is one of the best non-game hockey days I’ve ever had.
