ST. PETERSBURG - There’s a catcher in the lineup at DH again for the Rays tonight, and it isn’t John Jaso.
Kelly Shoppach is not only in at DH, but he’s also batting cleanup. Dioner Navarro is catching and batting eighth, and John Jaso, who had five RBIs in his last start (Sunday at Texas), is on the bench.
Manager Joe Maddon said he opted for the right-handed hitting Shoppach over left-handed hitting Jaso or Hank Blalock because Toronto’s right pitcher, Shaun Marcum, is tougher on lefties than righties. That also explains why the left-handed hitting Carlos Pena, coming off a two-home run game Tuesday, is batting seventh.
The Rays routed the Jays on Tuesday night, as Jeff Niemann threw a two-hit complete game shutout and Pena hit a solo home run and a grand slam.
Here is Tampa Bay’s lineup:
B.J. Upton, CF
Carl Crawford, LF
Evan Longoria, 3B
Kelly Shoppach, DH
Sean Rodriguez, 2B
Ben Zobrist, RF
Carlos Pena, 1B
Dioner Navarro, C
Reid Brignac, SS
