The first 50 picks, representing the first and supplemental first rounds, of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft came and went Monday night without a player with local ties having his name called.
Tuesday, however, should be a bit different.
Rounds 2-30 will be held on the draft’s second day, which begins at noon, and several area baseball players could hear their names called before major league baseball clubs call it a day.
Baseball America ranks two players with local ties - University of South Carolina right-handed pitcher and Jesuit High product Sam Dyson (No. 106), and Jesuit left-handed pitcher Daniel Gibson (No. 148) - among the top 200 prospects for the draft.
Several other area prospects were ranked by Baseball America among the Top 100 draft-eligible prospects in the state. Among them were:
Tampa Catholic catcher Shane Rowland (No. 28)
University of Florida right-handed pitcher and Alonso High product Tommy Toledo (No. 37)
Clearwater infielder Sean O’Brien (No. 46)
Brandon catcher Roderick Shoulders (No. 50)
Brooks-DeBartolo infielder Jadamion Williams (No. 51)
Armwood infielder/right-handed pitcher Zack Powers (No. 52)
University of Tampa left-handed pitcher and Durant High product Carmine Giardina (No. 53)
University of South Florida left-handed pitcher and Riverview High product Andrew Barbosa (No. 60)
Alonso left-handed pitcher Thomas Dorminy (No. 89)
