No Crawford for series finale

DETROIT—Message scrawled on a marker board in the hallway outside the Rays’ clubhouse this morning:
“You have to be able to take a punch if you wanna be a champion. Fighters with glass jaws don’t ever get to wear the championship belt.”
Indeed, the Rays need to show some resiliency if they’re going to stay alive in the American League playoff race. They’ll try to salvage a split in their four-game series with the Tigers today at Comerica Stadium and take some momentum into a three-game home series this week with the Red Sox.
With the Rays facing a tough lefthander today in Jarrod Washburn, manager Joe Maddon has given Carl Crawford the day off. Here is Tampa Bay’s lineup:
Jason Bartlett, SS
Gabe Kapler, LF
Ben Zobrist, RF
Pat Burrell, DH
Evan Longoria, 3B
Carlos Pena, 1B
Willy Aybar, 2B
Dioner Navarro, C
B.J. Upton, CF
