I recently stopped by a couple of bookstores to pick up the college football preseason magazines that come out every summer.
It’s been a tradition of mine ever since I was a kid and first developed a love of college football thanks to Herschel Walker and the 1980 Georgia Bulldogs.
Even in the Information Age in which we live, I find the magazines a great resource to check out quick facts throughout the season. They usually feature an interesting read or two as well.
As I browsed the newsstand for this year’s offerings from the four major publications – Lindy’s, The Sporting News, Phil Steele’s and Athlon Sports – I couldn’t help but notice nothing on the covers about USF or Skip Holtz.
Florida State’s Christian Ponder, Florida’s Jeffery Demps and Miami’s Jacory Harris all made covers, but no B.J. Daniels.
I figured maybe the store I was in simply hadn’t received the regional covers aimed for the Tampa Bay market. Turns out, none of the magazines produced a USF cover to sell in the Bay area.
Click here to read my story in today’s Tampa Tribune. The editors explain the absence of USF.
Are you surprised Holtz’s hiring didn’t at least get USF some cover love from the magazines? Do you think this is more a sign of USF’s image nationally, or simply no big deal and summer filler to discuss until fall camp opens Aug. 4?

I wouldn’t have been disappointed until I learned that so many other Big East schools were featured in their markets. Then I was a little put off. But that’s the story of USF - for years I couldn’t buy a T shirt anywhere except the campus bookstore, and now I can get the at Walmart, Bucs and Bulls Heaven and a lot of other places. When we start to dominate our conference, they won’t be able to print USF covers fast enough. Until then, we are an also ran to the Gators, Noles, and canes - at least as far as the press is concerned. Don’t forget, it took many many years for the Trib to put a USF win higher in the paper then a UF win. Thankfully with the internet we can skip the other schools’ stuff.

They must agree with me that this season will be a bad one and that’s why they didn’t garner any covers.

I hate to say it, but yeah. With all the coaching changes, then with the offensive and defensive schemes changing, I predict a tough year for the Bulls. They would have probably had a tough year under Leavitt, too, but I would have held out hope that for his Annual Surprise Win Big Game Of The Year we might have taken down Florida. I don’t see any chance of that right now. But hopefully, after Skip gets a chance to fully recruit his team next year, we wil start to see good things. It’s probably not fair to expect much before that, due to his late arrival to the team.
Scott, what would you predice for the year?

Dan, if I were a serious bettor, was in Vegas with my last dollar trying to cash in on a better life, and I could turn that dollar into a million if I placed a correct bet on what USF’s record would be in 2010, I’d bet 7-5.
Winning record, bowl trip, but not enough talent around this year for a huge season in Holtz’s first year.
If Bulls go 9-3 or better, Holtz should win Big East coach of the year hands down.

Scott, please don’t place that bet…
Most likely 5-7. Possibly even 4-8 and winless in Big East play.
And I’ve been accused of being too much of a homer.

KK, if Bulls go winless in Big East play, I’m buying you dinner at Bern’s in December.
I’ve never been great in the prediction business, but see them winning at least a couple in Big East…having said that, with road trips to UF and Miami, if they only win a couple of BE games, your 5-7 could be spot on…we’ll see.

Sweet! I’m hungry…but I won’t be rooting against the Bulls, just to be clear.

All those who were so eager to get rid of CJL must be dismayed over these predictions. If CJL wasn’t getting the most out of his players, and CSH has most of the same players more or less plus the best recruiting class in our history now ready to play, if CSH can’t improve on CJL’s record, we should be seeing outrage from the fans.

Don’t forget those five players lost in the NFL draft, and the six starters gone on defense…that is a lot to lose no matter the coach…that’s why I see the 2011 Bulls a less talented team than 2010 version…great thing is, there could be another Pierre-Paul on the 2011 team that we don’t know about yet.

It will be a rough, disappointing season because there were too many changes. Now, you and I don’t get that kind of leeway at our jobs, but Holtz will and so will the Bulls - this year. We may see a few hidden diamonds as some talented players see the field under Holtz that would not have under Leavitt, due to politics or whatever, but the reason Cinderella stories make such great news is because they are so RARE. I just don’t see all of our problems going away, getting a winning record in BE play, and calming everyone’s nerves in one season. But I’ll be happy if it does! And thank goodness we are finally talking about USF football!

Yes, we lost some players and some good ones, but that’s true of everyone, and we have a tough road schedule, but if we had to replace CJL in order to do worse, I’ll be one very disappointed Bulls fan.

My God. Does anyone around here ever have anything positive to say? EVER? I come here to get my rah-rah on because I’m jonesin’ for football season, and I’m greeted by tar. I think Skip is going to surprise a lot of people. If he can do what he did with NC talent, what can he do with Florida talent? Go Bulls!

joecole, thanks for your complete lack of perspective and your obvious unfamiliarity with about 99& of my posts.
That’s okay; I don’t write them for you, I write them for me.
Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, wants a hugely successful season for the Bulls more than I do.
