ST. PETERSBURG - Jeff Niemann threw a bullpen session during the Rays’ off-day workout today and said his back feels fine and that he expects to make his next scheduled start Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
Niemann (7-2, 2.77 ERA) left Sunday’s game against the Indians after only five innings and 70 pitches with back stiffness, but he said Thursday his back has responded to treatment and rest.
He said he spent the All-Star break in his native Texas, took soft-tissue treatments with “people in Houston that I go to,” and spent time on his 160-acre ranch about two hours west of Houston.
“Did some fishing in the ponds, saw some deer; it was nice,” Niemann said. “It was good to get away for a few days and get your mind right for the second half.”
Manager Joe Maddon held a meeting lastiing about 15 minutes with players and coaches on the field before the Rays worked out for a little more than an hour. The four players who participated in Tuesdays’ All-Star Game - Evan Longoria, Carl Crawford, David Price and Rafael Soriano - were excused from practice and will join the team in New York.
The Rays open a three-game series against the first-place Yankees on Friday night in what will be the first game at Yankee Stadium since owner George Steinbrenner’s passing on Tuesday.
