PORT CHARLOTTE Jeff Niemann turned in another strong outing Friday night against the Yankees.
The righty struck out seven, allowed six hits and two runs in 4 2/3 innings - his longest stint of the spring - in the Rays 6-2 victory.
He did walk a batter, but that was the first batter he walked all spring.
In his last two appearances, Niemann has struck out 13 batters.
“Once again, nice,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “His command of the strike zone is pretty impressive right now.”
Maddon is impressed with the way Niemann is pounding the strike zone with all his pitches.
“You look at the quality of swings, he’s getting a lot of swings and misses, too, while he was throwing strikes,” Maddon said. “That’s very encouraging to see.”
