Next season has arrived

CINCINNATI - Next season has already arrived for the University of South Florida.

Even with three regular season games and a bowl (call now: St. Pete Bowl operators are standing by) remaining, the Bulls have begun setting their sights toward next year.

“It’s disappointing,” USF senior C Jake Griffin said. “We wanted a Big East championship. Now you just have to go out and play for the next snap, play for your brother, play for the young guys. Hopefully get them ready for next season.”

The No. 24-ranked Bulls’ 24-10 loss at Cincinnati Thursday night ended any long shot hopes for a Big East title and will send them out of the national rankings.

“All the work that we put it in, I’m not going to say it [wasn’t] in vain, but it stands for nothing right now,” USF junior LB Kion Wilson said. “Realistically we understand [we’re eliminated]. All we can do is prepare and play hard as if we were still in the running.”

The Bulls (6-3, 1-3 Big East) began the season with their first preseason national ranking and reached No. 10. Now, they’re reduced to playing make believe.

“It’s not gone the way we intended,” USF senior LT Ryan Schmidt said. “We still have a chance, three more games. We can still have a 10-win season. We’re devastated. We’ve got a week to turn it around.”

Added QB Matt Grothe, who has five interceptions in USF’s last two games: “We couldn’t do anything. They did a good job of stopping us and we did a good job of stopping ourselves.”

WHAT WENT RIGHT: RB Ben Williams had a season-high 79 yards rushing on 17 carries. … The defense forced a season-high tying three turnovers (fumble recoveries by Craig Marshall and George Selvie and a Sabbath Joseph interception).

WHAT WENT WRONG: USF allowed four pass plays of 25 yards or longer at Cincinnati. In USF’s first four games, the Bulls allowed only five completions of 25 yards or longer; in their last five games, they’ve allowed 13. “We’re giving up a lot of big plays,” USF senior LB Tyrone McKenzie said. “It’s what we’ve never done, I don’t understand. We have to get it fixed soon.” … The Bulls committed eight penalties, their season average. USF had three other penalties (two pass interference and a defensive holding) negated because UC took the result of the play. … Thursday’s loss was only the third time in Grothe’s career he did not have a TD run or pass. Cincinnati, which also did it in 2006, is the only team to hold Grothe scoreless twice. … The Bulls had seven possessions in UC territory, but managed only 10 points. In USF’s three losses, the Bulls have only five offensive TDs.

Brett,
That’s why the coaches should be a fault here!!!

Lack of preparation, lack of concentration, lack of motivation, etc.

Losing 3 games in a row, 2 years in a row, It is unacceptable!!!

We have more talent than Cincy (on paper) but they looked like they were more prepared than us and that’s why they kicked our butt.

We need to start thinking about our coaching staff

Michael and Keith, as far as Thursday night games, USF has virtually no say in the matter. It’s a benefit to be on Thursday night with all the exposure you receive (of course it helps if you win). The Big East makes sure both teams have the same amount of preparation. Both USF and Pitt played on the Saturday before Thursday game and both USF and Cincy played on the Saturday before their Thursday game.

nail on the head right there…These thursday night games are the dumbest things ever.  Talk about gimping teams.

Okay, since we are talking about next season already, let’s talk scheduling. If we are going to play Thursday night games, make them on the week after a bye week not the week before. I understand the importance of being on national television, but we only want to be there if we have a chance of looking good. Let our players rest before the next nationally televised game.

As far as the games left to play.  We have 2 home games left for fans that paid money to see. We also have at least 1 more regular season game on national TV and probably two if the West Virginia game helps determine who wins the Big East.  We also would have a bowl game on national TV.

I am not happy with our losses and the apparent ability for our conference rivals to exploit our weaknesses but there is still a lot to play for.

In conclusion all the seniors on this team better appreciate the fact that they got to play in 4 straight bowl games.

All I have to say is:
Can we get some damn DB’s?
Can we get new Offensive Coordinator, these last 2-3 years of playcalling are giving me an aneurysm.  Someone get Mike Hobbe out of retirment.  If Leavitt wont make the O-Coordinator change maybe he should leave too!

We can still finish the season 10 and 3, beat another ranked opponent, increase the draft status of some of our seniors, continue showing recruits that we are a program on the rise.  We can finish a season ranked for the first time.

We could also show a bowl that our fans can go to a game and actually sell our allotment of tickets.  If we get to a bowl this year maybe we could put some effort into winning it.

Sorry but the season is not over for every team that isn’t getting one of the BCS bowl spots.

I just wonder what Leavitt is like to work for/play for. His sideline antics are unbelievable. He has been known to get in the face of coaches/players on national tv. It is almost embarrassing to watch him on tv. Does he have the respect of his players, coaches??? If not, are we seeing that reflected in how they play for him. Stories from the locker room sound like he goes nuts. Yelling, screaming and headbutting aren’t necessarily good motivators.

Mike, USF initially wanted to try to get a medical hardship for Daniels. If they still want to do that, then he will not play. That’s something I’ll check with Leavitt about.

Terry…Maybe I will take the trip.  It will be about 4.5 hours.  Plus, maybe it will be snowing.  It is my dream to see a football game in the snow.  I will let you know.

The Bucs need to end this Tampa/USF hangover.

1. USF soccer just lost at Cincy
2. Bucs (I am from Tampa originally) lose to beatable Dallas
3. Rays looked eminently beatbable in the Series
4. Chucky Atkins is out due to surgery
4. JR Reed gets cut
5. Solomon Jones does nothing in opener
6. Andre Hall plays horribly on MNF

Of well, at least we have Kawika.

Jeff… Sounds like you’re making the trip to Morgantown like myself. I just hope they show up at this point. I remember one season in particular where it made me sick to my stomach towards the end of the season as you could tell players had thrown in the towel.

I’m making the expensive trek across country for the WVU game… hopefully they come ready to play ala Pitt last season. I honestly hope WVU runs the table so we can play spoiler this season.

At least I get to see the Caps play the Islanders that Thursday night before the game. One W for sure.

Brett,

Will we see any of BJ Daniels at QB with the Big East title lost?  Just wondering if they will give him some game action and break him in a little.  He really needs to get on the field be it qb or wr.  He is a playmaker!

Just to note…I don’t understand why people are calling for Grothe’s head.  It isn’t his fault he constantly faces 3rd and 8 or 3rd and 12.  It is hard to be effective from those distances.

JT, when you are a true and passionate fan, you need to vent.  Fan, as you are aware, is short for fanatic.  Blogging is a great avenue to vent. The venting fan will be first to congratulate USF and be pumped after the next W.

With Leavitt, it cannot be like “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”  He cannot repeatly fail to get his team emotionally prepared for important Big East games and then be praised.

This year’s team will be a huge disappointment if they d/n win @ WVU.  I want toughness to show that they can win a Big E. road game.  I will trade a W v. CONN or Rutgers for a W @ WVU.

JT, it is hard to keep perspective. We would have had football without Leavitt; we just would have had football with a different head coach - and probably nowhere near as successful as we’ve become! Every story on the Bulls for the past 2 years started with the reporter being amazed that the program is so young. There are so many positives to see in such a short history. But I want us to keep making forward progress every year, and we don’t look like we did this year. We are definitely spoiled football fans in this area, because we wanted a Big East title this year and a national championship in a few years. I can do without that for now, but I want to see good play on the field and a team that’s always improving.

Brett, I think Leavitt’s a decent enough head coach, with a few reservations. I think he was surprised when some of his assistant coaches left, and probably had to find a replacement on short notice. Difficult. Seeing that weak spot, Leavitt needs help in recruiting coaches.

I like the idea of Canales as OC, and I would LOVE to see a special teams coach - because that department is going to be the hole in the boat that sinks Leavitt. Special Teams plays poorly just about every game, it’s coached by Leavitt, and it’s taking time away from what he should be focusing on, which is making improvements in every phase of the game, the future of the team (better coaches, etc) and FEWER PENALTIES!!!

How would you grade Leavitt as a head coach?

Posted by  JT Smith, Tampa, FL on 11/01  at  06:09 AM

David, you’re an idiot.  Leavitt has a master’s degree from Missouri.  Leavitt built this football team that you supposedly support from the ground up.  If it weren’t for him, there would be no team.  Where were all of you Johnny-come-latelys when we weren’t nationally ranked.  And suddenly we hit a roadblock and now everyone is jumping off the ship.  Well, I say good.  Who needs fans like that anyway.  Go root for the Gators…we don’t need you.  You make it harder for me to get good seats at the game anyway…

Oh, and FYI…even the great Bear Bryant had a string of seasons in which he really struggled.  Leavitt will make adjustments and improve, as will the team.

The Rays are already working towards 2009, the bulls fans can’t wait until 2015…..GO BULLS

Brett get it started

come on he sucks and he can not even speak…its embarrassing…why is not even talked about that he can’t put a sentence together…..if it was not for football he would be a bus boy at Village Inn…and probably not a very good one..
