Just when things appeared to be on the upswing for the Newsome football program this season, bad news has come for the Wolves.
Coach Kenneth Hiscock said Tuesday night that standout junior fullback Conner Powers could be done for the season after suffering a leg injury in last Friday’s win over Leto. Powers, who left in the first half of that victory over the Falcons, is definitely out for this week’s district game at Bloomingdale, said Hiscock, who added the exact amount of time Powers will be sidelined won’t be known until an MRI is done on Wednesday.
“It’s unfortunate that it (an injury) had to happen to him,” Hiscock said. “We’re just going to have to press on.”
Hiscock originally thought Powers injured his hamstring against Leto. However, the coach said Tuesday that the injury now appears to be “behind his knee.” Hiscock couldn’t provide any more information.
Powers entered the 2009 season with more than 2,000 career rushing yards to his credit. He currently ranks among Hillsborough County’s leading rushers this season with 616 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.
